Tech Support From The Dark Ages

Unfortunately I never got to try this game as numerous connection problems prevented the updates from downloading prior to play. Appaling tech support, and complete lack of interest of customer service. Forget this product, try Asheron's Call instead.

OK people so it has a few bugs

This is a good expansion for everquest. I say good because it does limit the lower level characters for adventuring in it unless you are an Iksar and some do get some drag from video glitches but all in all for those that are high enough level it is a well needed expansion. It gives higher levels an added challenge that other games do not and it does not end so there is no "ok so I finished it, what now". Another aspect is it gives people a chance to meet other people from around the world without even going to the country they are in. Some may also say "What about the cost per month?" Ok, think about this. How much does it cost to go out on the town for ONE night a month? You can't do it for even $10.00 A NIGHT, let alone a month! The whole key to this game is to make friends and have fun. I recomend this game for people who want to save money and meet people from around the world ... not the power gamer types.

The best thing since sliced bread.

I am a true game addict and I know the good, from the bad, and from the ugly. This game I consider to be a good one. I say this because of the vast gameplay and the varieties of combinations you can choose to make your character. With 13 different races to choose from, (including Trolls, Ogres, Gnomes, etc..) 14 different classes to be, (including Wizards, Mages, Warriors, etc..) and 14 cities, the fun never ends. Weapons and armor can be bought to strengthen your character or just make him/her look beautiful and admired. This game was given a teen rating because of blood, gore, and animated violence. This so called blood and gore is not shown in EQ, the only blood in the game is hanging from the mouths of the evil ogres and whenever you are killed in the game, your corpse does not turn into a pile of rotting bones but just looks like someone curled up in a ball on the ground. This game does not just appeal to Americans only, there are also thousands of people from Germany to Russia. In short, this game is a must-have for anyone who is a true gamer and a game that should be kept away from people who want to spend any time with their families.

*sigh*

I am a causal gamer. I started playing this game when it first came out. Initaily, I loved it despite all of the glitches it has. But as time wore on, I found my self increasingly unstaisfied.I though "Gee, guess I'll try another class." and I did and found I like playing...then I took a break from it for about 6 months. After that long span of time I started playing again. Still though, I was unsatified. tried to play more combonations and different classes. About a year later I gave up. No other game has truly proven to be as tedious as this one, no other game has ever had such terrible users support and help, and finally, no aspect of this game gives any sort of accomplishment. All you do is run around killing things. There is no thinking involved, unless you are an enchanter, but that is one tough class to play at times. It is also exclusivly tailored to what are called mega or farm guilds. They sit around tough mobs and kill them, geting the loot so that they can sell. Can anyone imagine anything more ludicrious than that?! It a damn game! Anyhow, I'm going to try AC. From what I hear, that is more my sort of game.

I've been playing video games for many years now. Considering Atari came out when I was 7. The main discussion with my friends would be, 'I can't wait until video games become more realistic'. Well, now it's happened. 90% of the people in EQ are real people. You can talk and interact with people who have opinions. (Beat that PONG) Everthing about your character is customizable. From what they wear, to their alchohol tolerence. (Yes, you can get wasted in EQ) The more you level, the stronger you become. But to level, you will more then likely have to team, or (group) with other players. Each class of people have thier own duties. Warriors are the brute strength, and Clerics are the healers, Wizards are casters. (this is very a very basic description) If you're healer isn't healing...you die. If you're Wizard isn't wizzing...you die. ETC... You work as a group and if you don't work well together then....you guessed it....you die. That's when you start to bond with other players. When you slay a dragon with a party of you're buddies, you'll know what I mean. And this game is not only for guys....(thank god). I was very suprised to see how many women play this game. My girlfriend for instance used to watch me play, and always said 'How can you play that for so long'. Now I have to pry her off of her LVL 5 Cleric so I can play. This game is beautiful, but don't expect it to be too detailed. By having it at slightly lower resolution, the game runs REALLY fast. But once you see a sunset or sunrise, you'll realise that the graphics are BUTTER. The items you can get for you're characters,(i.e long robes, shields, jewelry) look great too. And they set you apart from everyone else. And as for quests, there are TONS of them. They make up the game. But they don't just pop out at you everytime you play. You'll talk to someone, another player or a store clerk or a merchant. The more you inquire the more quests you will find. And players on-line develope thier own quests which makes it really easy to gain experience, different items and spells. There are many ways you can label this game, it has no set motive. You can make it a chatroom, where you can move your character around and change the appearance of your body. Or you can use this game as a hack 'n slash where you get all your agression out on some nasty looking beasts....OR you can do what I and many other players out in EQland do. Roleplay. Strive to be the most powerfull Wizard, or the strongest Warrior on the planet. Slay dragons and befriend unicorns. Be the true person you are inside, and that makes the game fun. Graphics in some areas are lacking, (very few) and there are some bug problems. But the community and the possibilities for the game are endless. There are some characters in the game that haven't even been fought with since the development of the game!!! The scale is huge. But if you don't like this game...that's cool. This game is what you make of it. But if you don't have imagination, then you shouldn't be playing a roleplaying game anyway....>83D)

It's about community

This is not a single-player game - going "solo" can be doneand there are times when that's appropriate (exploring, doing "quests," working on trade skills, testing your mettle, etc.), but the fun is in the hunting groups that you become a part of.

If you like being part of an online community made up of not just kids, give this game a try. The whole concept revolves around meeting and playing with new people all the time. I don't know anyone else in "real life" who plays, but I've made tons of casual friends and even a few really good friends just from meeting them through the course of the game.

The range of players is from 12 to 80 (probably some even younger and older!), with the majority seeming to fall into the twenty- and thirty-somethings. While you will invariably meet up with some immature kids - and I have to admit, some immature adults - you'll find that the majority of players are fun-loving, kind, helpful, and generous - often to a fault. If you play the game like a regular joe and not a moron, you'll have all the help and support you need from this gaming community.

The developers have done a good job of providing you with lots of choices in play type. To play every race and class combination possible would keep you busy for a very long time. As would getting to every "zone" and hunting every type of creature, or completing every quest. You can create characters to your heart's content without paying an additional penny (only one character can be in-game at a time however). You can play to kill other players (there are three servers dedicated to that), or you can play like the majority and not kill each other (about 28 servers so far for that). But even on non-PvP servers you can duel to the death (if both players agree) either to defend your honor or just show your buddy who's boss!

Unlike some others who posted reviews here, I've found the online GMs helpful and supportive. Same with Verant Tech Support. I've had occassion to ask for help from the GMs and Tech Support on a number of occassions. Like any other human beings, treat them with respect and you'll get respectful help back.

I've not experienced the connection or lag problems that others seem to have suffered. Though it is true that the game has some stiff hardware requirements. You can play with the minimum system requirements, but more power (especially RAM and a good 3D card) will allow you to enjoy the game much more.

And the online community supports the players with forums and web sites filled with helpful information and advice, so you can get as much or as little help as you want to have a good time and progress your character.

Does the game have bugs? Yah. It's software, afterall. I've yet to run any game or program that didn't have bugs. The serious bugs get addressed and fixed in a timely manner. In seven months of play I don't personally know anyone who couldn't play because of a bug. Most bugs are on a schedule for fixing and get fixed eventually, and some will probably never, ever, be fixed. In my experience that's no different from any other software company.

All in all, what more could you want...?

Too good to bash

This game is the best. Graphically stunning, visually beautiful and immerse. Never before has any game Ive played been the compelling. Thopusands of quests over 300,000 users online and never do I have problems moving around or slowing up. Sometimes there are problems, but it HAS to go with the territory. A game this incredible, with so much going on at one time has to have some bugs and the Sony team is constantly patching and making sure all is well. Id really suggest this to anyone who love fantasy roleplay and online games. My only suggestion is....have a machine which is very high spec-wise or you will run into problems. I played on a 200 Mhz and had many issues, and when I switched to my 800 Mhz, it runs so well, that Ive become an addict.

Everquest is a year old, its a online game with on average 1800 people on each of its 26 servers.

Its losely based on old school AD&D, it features flashy graphics, sounds, and pictures.

The gameplay is below average, long stretchs of time are spent killing the same things over and over again, as far as quests there are few of real value.

I would suggest if you new to the game, to make friends early, because you will need them to help keep the bordem down at high levels. Also play a caster class.

The death of this game is the static world. Nothing in this game ever changes. People dont die, creatures are killed only to respawn minutes later, cities are present at the start and are from then on the exact same, ect...

Roleplaying in this environment is impossible and most players are dead against it (they will actually belittle you for it). If dark characters or races wish to destroy a good city they are unable. The guards are buffed to near invinsible status. It used to be that you could kill guards but now they had a magic resist increase so that noone in the game can touch them. These guards even if killed will just respawn 5 minutes later which means a evil force will never hold a city and will never be able to destroy it.

The world of Norath is completly untouchable and unchangable to the players. Trees in the game can not be chopped down, buildings cannot be created or destroyed and great creatures such as dragons are killed only to come alive 1 week later like they were never killed to begin with. The lack of changes and the lack of things to do other then exp and get KewL LeWt is the death of this game. A world such as this where the players have more control and where they could affect the environment and enact real changes would be somthing great but this game is the opposite.

This is not a MMORPG it is a MMOG there is no RP to this game at all. This basically is a game where you play to get tougher so you can get better stuff. After you have spent real months of your time finally trying to get tough you find that you are still weak and at level 60 (the highest you can get this will take 1000's of hours) you are still no match for the town guards with their magic imunity. There is no end to this game it is named well and there is no point.

This game is a very well made graphical interface that will have you calling in sick to work the next day! This game allows you to play a multitude of races (from elves to trolls and the new lizard men) and alows you to choose your character's appearance, so you don't look like every other Tom, Dick or Harry adventurer. You are able to develop your trade skills (cooking, fletching, gemsmithing, etc.) to expert levels while at a low level, making the game easier for people wanting to buy the best in armor, weapons, spells and magic items.
