What you'll realize in a month

As is the case with many of these 4 and 5 star reviews, i was impressed with the concept and glitz of Everquest in the first month that i bought the game. It wasn't until about a month into the game thati realized the true colors of the game, as i became extremely bored or angry everytime that i played. I would put hours into the game at a time, and not accomplish anything. So i quit. Canecelled my account and didn't play the game for 6 months. Just recently i got bored and reactivated my account to see if anything had changed, but i was dissappointed to find that the game was in the same sad state as when i left.

There are so many bad things about this game, but i will try to list them here in brief form.

1) Verant, company that made the game, is money hungry and does not listen to or take input from it's players at all. In fact through it's customer service policies the company proves that it assumes all players are snotty/whiny/cheating/scammers. If you doubt any of this all you need to do is read the Official Everquest forum at check out the gameplay forum especially, this is the only forum that the ONLY public relations employee at verant reads, so its where most of the players go to speak their mind)

2) The only way to advance your character is by leveling up since you cannot get experience any other way. Technically you can get experience by doing quests, but its so little thats its not worth the effort. Since characters are defined by classes, almost all characters of the same class and level are exactly the same.

3) There are tons of bugs in this game, and with such a poor Customer service department, if you die from a bug you are screwed. You could lose all of your items and money due to a bug, but you will not be compensated.

4) The economy is out of control. I mean it doesn't work at all. Inflation is so bad that at high levels money becomes useless.

5) Trade skills are useless and/or not profitable. For some reason in Everquest trade skills such as Smithing/fletching/tailoring, etc... are useless. the time and money you put into these skills will never pay off since the cost to buy the raw goods often exceed the profit you make by selling the product. Several of the Trade skills have been broken since day one... such as alchemy.

6) The downtime in between fights can be huge! Seriously once you pass level 10 you have to wait several minutes in between each fight to restore your hit points and magic points. At the higher levels i heard it takes as long as 20 minutes to recover mana, and during this time your character must be sitting down, and not doing anything at all. So i guess the players of everquest are supposed to read a book or do their laundry during these long periods of downtime.

7) oh yeah, due to the way the game is structured, its not really an RPG. Its a hack and slash game where the only purpose is to gain more levels. The quests are far and few in between and most of them are pretty lame. The players have absolutely NO impact on the world. You cannot join an army, or hold a goverment position, or any kind of job for that matter. You are good for nothing other than killing monsters out in the wilderness... which after a while gets really boring.

8) The creatures that give the best loot are "Camped" 24/7, meaning that several groups will sit and wait at the areas where these monsters spawn and kill it as soon as it spawns, and then wait again for however long it takes for the monster to spawn again... sometimes hours. Again this is very lame and boring.

oh well, i guess thats enough reasons for now, although I"m sure i could think of more if i tried... oh yeah the grouping system is not good. You can only effectively group with people near you in level otherwise neither person will gain experience.

My advice? In my opinion there aren't any good MMORPGS out right now, Asheron's Call has potential. You can try Everquest if you are bored and want to see what these online games are like, but don't let it dissappoint you the way it did me. The game has lots of potential, but for whatever reason Verant fell flat on its face as far as making any of it work.

Nice expansion for a nice game.

Ruins of Kunark is a pretty nice expansion. The graphics are better than anywhere on the other three continents (except maybe for the city of Paineel on Odus), and there are some wicked MOBs to fight for any level. Everquest in general is a pretty nice game. Nice graphics, nice items, and I like the fact that every class has to group with others to advance to higher levels (except for Necromancers, of course =P ). I'd give the game 5 stars, but there is one thing that bugs me. The game is a bit too focused on the Powergamer, and not nearly enough on the true Role Player. The only way to get any RPing done is to either play on the Race War servers, or play on Fennin Ro (the unofficial RP server). Otherwise, it's a fun game. Oh, and did I mention that it's addicting? EQ is the virtual version of crack. But with a little will power, you can overcome it.

Taluvan Pinewalker- 35 Wood Elf Ranger

Kraile Fumblednote- 26 Human Bard

EverQuest, the best MMRPG (massive multi-player role playing game) on the market at this time. First, this game is addictive, if you value anything in your REAL life like; relationships, work, school, health, or your pets... don't buy this game. It is extremely addictive, and I say that from experience. As for the actual game, the graphics are wonderful, not as good as say Quake 3 but better then any other Online RPG out there. The game play is good, combat can get a little boring and monotonous if you let it. The interface is not very user friendly, with a manual that is better tossed in the garbage then read, EverQuest is not a game for newbies. The game is good but not perfect, it has some serious balance issues, especially in the PVP (player vs player) department. And you will find your self using the ignore command often with all the immature kids who play. If you are looking for a real role playing game don't bother here. Very few people role play in EverQuest, which overall degrades the experience. The kunark expansion, adds a new race (Iksar) and a new continent to explore. The graphics have been improved on the new continent and realy add to the game. All in all it is a good game, and even better if you play it with real life friends.

GOOD, but not for EVERYONE.

I like the game (that's why it gets 4 stars), but it's only fun for those who spend 12 hours a day on the damn thing. A casual player like myself plays maybe an hour or 2 a week. There are 2 problems with this. The game is huge and if you plan on being just a casual player you are going to get nowhere and whine because you get killed alot. Second, this game is really friggin' expensive so unless you play all day everday, you aren't getting your money's worth. Bottom line: unless you plan on being obsessed with this game, and forget everything else it's not for you.

Peace.

Everquest: A game thats either loved..... or hated

Wecome to the world of Everquest. Prepare to enter a world of magical creatures and dangerous foes. The most dangerous foe of all....... the people who gave this game a bad review.

Face it. If you are at all like me you probably wouldn't want to buy this game after reading some of the low reviews this game has gotten on Amazon. If, though, you looked at the people who reviewed this game, you would soon notice they dont grasp the point. Yes if you look at the baisic part to the game it is this: Fight... fight some more... gain level... figt even more than before... still fight... gain another level and so on. But there is much more. In Everquest there are places to go, people to see, things to do. You create or join guilds... go on quests... explore foreign lands.

This game is either hated or loved. You either get a lot out of it or you dont. You have to understand what the game is really about. This is a game for lovers of fantasy, for people who read Dragonlance books or Forgotten Realms books, for people who play AD&D. This is NOT a game for people who do not like the Final Fantasy series of games, or people who do not like Diablo or Warcraft. I recommend this game to people who respect fantasy for what it is.

It just lost it's appeal

After the continual persistence of a good friend of mine, I decided to purchase "Everquest". Up to this point I had only heard good things about it, and did look interesting when I watched my friend play it. So I thought I would give it a try. In the end it got old, and I cancelled my account.

Let me start off first by listing the games good points. The graphics are very good, smooth, and crisp. It has very little lag, which is one of the main reasons I gave it two stars. Let me tell you, I play Ultima Online and it lags horrendously. On my pentium 233, 33.6 modem I wasn't expecting anything differnet when I started EQ. I was greatly surprised. The game ran smoothly, and only went choppy at times when there was a great crowd of people around me. I definently give credit to Verant for that. There are a lot of different races and classes provided which offers a lot of variety. There is the faction system. Evil players can't get into good towns because of bad faction with the guards, etc. Some people may tell you it's annoying, but I think it adds to the value. There are endless quests to keep you occupied, tons of items to get, and so many differnt places to go. Unfortunately, it's going to take you a LONG time to go to get to these places.

Now to the bad points. Character development is slow and tedious. Level ups don't come without hours of work. Just getting to level 12 took me over 24hours playing time. I played a Dark Elf Shadow Knight for those who are familiar with the game. The hardest class to get level ups in. As another reviewer made a point before, it gets boring. For the first month of playing I loved it, and then I slowly started to realize, that I kept doing the same thing over and over again. Go out, fight, sit down and heal, fight some more, and desperately try to get that level up. A lot of EQ players have a terrible attitude. Trying to roleplay will get other players sneering, and cussing you out. I'm sorry but I thought it was supposed to be a "role playing game"! I think a great number of players are just intolerant teenagers. In one instance, I was out fighting in a desert called North Ro. A dark elf npc named Dorn was there, and people were asking others to help kill it. I declined, because since I myself were Dark Elf, my faction would take a bad hit. One player responded saying "F--k your faction". I'm sorry, I just don't appreciate that in a video game. People take it far to seriously. After endlessly trying to get level ups, I got tired of it. The appeal was gone, and my account was cancelled soon after.

The game has it's high points, but it's value is brought down greatly with the mass of bad points. I've heard of a lot of people getting addicted to the game. Somehow struggling to get a level up, getting endlessly frusterated in the process, doesn't sound too exciting or addictive to me. If you find you're getting addicted, get off of it. Don't neglect your family because of it. How stupid can one get? As for me, I'll stick with my Ultima Online for now. And the friend who got me into the game? He's since quit, after reaching lvl 52 with his Shadow Knight, for the same reason I did.

Not Recommended!

The Truth about Everquest!

The Game: As far as Graphics and Challenges well there is nothing better on the market! You can either Solo or Group play and there are also Trades to take up. Fletching, Smithing, Tailoring, Jewel Crafting, etc. This is probably one of the main failings of the game... The Trades are basically non factors, Except Jewel crafting and even that is negligible! EQ has no economy as does Ultima! Many players in Ultima spend their days Working in their chosen trades and many players are eager to buy their wares. If EQ had spent a little more time on the trades and made them truly useful to players a TRUE economy could have developed. Combat is tedious but Spellcasting is somewhat exciting... Classes are stock with little room for customizing your character save for weapon selection and clothing and armor! The Customer Service: Well if they have such a thing it is by accident! The so called GMs (Game Masters) Treat people with disdain in most cases, and out right contempt in others (The good experiences people have with GMS are the exception rather than the rule!) It is hard to describe these situations to non players but to give an idea how bad customer service is in EQ imagine going to restaurant and standing in line (for a very long time) to use the salad bar, getting your food, having a waiter knock your dish out of your hand (without as much as an "excuse me" from him) when you get back to your seat someone else is at your table and when you went to complain to the management their reaction is "can your prove this happened?" I am a middle-aged adult and own a business and am astonished how rude the top management is towards their customer base! This gives one an idea how powerful this game medium is and when the next step (The Future Game that will be better than Everquest) comes Customers will drop this game in droves!

So Much Unfulfilled Potential

Everquest. One of a very few (so far) "Massively Multiplayer" online games. Everquest allows you a 3D perspective into a high-fantasy world. It's a standard computer "roleplaying" game with a ton of other people.

The good bits? The first time you see a giant, it'll probably give you a rush of "Wow, that's really BIG." The game world is also pretty large, and some bits of it are stunningly beautiful, and contain challenging and entertaining quests for the player. This game is genuinely fun, for a while.

The bad bits? Eventually, you're just doing the exact same thing over and over again. A very vocal minority of the player population needs to relax. Badly. Characters have an extremely limited range of customization. And, of course, my personal pet peeve: You can spend a lot of time and money to learn how to make things. At the time of this writing, you can easily obtain far more powerful items far more easily. Thus, time spent to painstakingly master the art of making armor is time totally wasted.

In all, it was rather fun to play for several weeks, but not at all worth the money. The beautiful user interface fails to make up for the extreme lack of variety.

As with everything, your milage may vary.

love to hate it, hate to love it

For all of you who are trying to figure out why some of the reviewers are so insistent that Everquest is not worthwhile, here's the reason ...The low reviewers probably had to face the reality that they are addicts just like the rest of us. They came to a point in their life where they had to choose between 1. losing their job, losing their significant other, and losing their hold-on-reality, (not to mention being really sick of ordering take-out because they've been too busy to cook hehe) or 2. cancelling their EQ account. The game made them angry because they thought of nothing else for weeks on end. Or perhaps they baracaded themselves into their bedroom, and spent a WEEK camping a particular lore item, only to lose the roll for it to another player..hehe. This game is HIGHLY addictive, and despite the "bugs" (none of which have I encountered in the 4 months I've played ), is pretty incredible. I imagine if you are not into interacting with other intelligent beings, and more interested in an instant-gratification, shoot-em up game that takes little more than hand-eye-coordination to succeed at, you would not enjoy EQ. It does take a LONG time to build up a decent character. But there are endless quests, endless items to seek out, a huge universe, and the best part....other real, live characters to interact with on many levels. There is a TON of information on the net, including item information, skill-developing instructions, and maps of the EQ world. The experiences I've had with the GMs has been positive, and as one other reviewer stated, if you treat them with respect they will do the same for you. I highly recommend Everquest.

I played EQ for a total of 8 months. I had some server problems, problems with billing and got tired of people camping for items. I got annoyed at the lack of people actually role-playing. But I didn't care. I played in every waking spare moment. For a while I didn't see the light of day because I was either working or online. My life outside of the world of Norrath became little more than a pretense whose only purpose was to enable more time on Everquest. I stayed up work nights to play. I gave up real-world friends for online ones. I got to know the pizza delivery boy on a first name basis. I broke up with my girlfriend. I forgot to pay bills. In effect, I took a long vacation from real life in favor of a virtual world. Don't misunderstand me, I do not have an addictive personality, I don't drink, take drugs or even smoke, and I have no psychiatric issues. But this game really messed me up. I finally quit when I realized that my life outside of Norrath was falling apart. After a few weeks of agony, I was 'normal' again, and could see all I had been blind to before.

The sad thing is I know there are a lot of people out there with the same problem who can't quit. Wake up! Don't sacrifice real life for a world that DOESN'T EVEN EXIST EXCEPT IN A SERVER! Your 35th level wizard won't get you a new car, a better job, a promotion, or (definitely not) better relations with your family, wife or whatever...that online life is worth nothing! Wake up to the fact that your lives in EQ may be an addiction!

I gave this program 3 stars, an average of 5 for design and content and 1 for the inherent risk to your earthly manifestation. Let this testimony be a ray of hope to the hopeless, I recovered--you can too!
