THIS GAME ROCKS!

OK I DLed the demo and the Wake Island patch, which added Wake Island map, airplanes, jeeps, ships, etc. IT OWNS! I love being a japanese zero and dive bombing the amerikansi. this game is so beautiful and not laggy. its funner then pretty much everything ive ever played. The game is arcadey, yet realistic, but its not a sim by a long shot. That is great, becuase it isnt tedious like Op Flash Point or WW2 Online,b ut its fun like MOHAA, DOD and Tribes 2. This is honestly the best game ive played in years. I definetly will buy this, and so should you...

My true story: Great anticipation vs. great frustration

BF1942 is a very promising and innovative game. It combines all types of combats (air, naval, tank and infantry) into one game. Its maps are very large to accommodate max. 64 players with ships, tanks and planes. The graphics are fairly detailed and visually pleasing.

With the release of its multiplayer demo, BF1942 demo instantly became the second most popular online game on GameSpy network--around 5,000 people playing at any given time. And I was one of them.

On the day of full game release, I rushed to buy it with great excitement. However, my great anticipation soon turned into great frustration:

1. While the MP demo runs smoothly on my PC, the retail version was often choppy. When I was on a ship, the lag was so serious that I fell off the deck several times.

2. My PC meets not only the minimum system requirements, but also the recommended ones. But I could hardly enjoy the game until I adjust all the settings to low--sound and graphics, and turn off antialiasing feature on my video card. I have never spent so much time in reading game forums and learning how to adjust settings in order to enjoy the game. Very frustrating.

3. Although the developer claims that this game can accommodate up to 64 players, I hardly see any servers hosting 64 players, not even the publisher's servers. My guess is that the game is too choppy to be playable if a server hosts 64 players.

Perhaps, BF1942 is such a great concept that it is ahead our time. Or the developer DICE lacks expertise in making such a large scale online game. Nevetherless, we should appreciate DICE for aiming high and pushing the evelope.

My advise is that: wait until a few more patches released before you buy.

I am pleased to say that with the release of patch 1.31, BF1942 run smoothly with no bugs. Also, note that I have upgraded my RAM from 256 MB to 512 MB.

Thus, I now give this game five stars!

The best WW2 Game out there

This game is simpely awesome. The controls, the graphics and the chacter models and the online aspect. There all Just great. 1st off id like to say, this game is the best for MMOG(massive mulitplayer online gameing) I meen, someone runs a server 20 people connect and shoot eachother. Theres rarely lag or anything of that sort. Its just hours of fun. Second, the controld in this game are very fluid and easy to use. The chacter models are second to none, i meen, look how realistic it looks. My Only complent is its very graphicly dammanding. I have a P4 at 2.0ghz, but run it at 2.37ghz, 512mb of system ram and an Geforce4 Ti4600 with 132mb ram and at max settings it still managed to lag my comp. But that was easily fixed by not running it at maxium settings. So, for anyone that just wants to have fun killig other people in a WW2 setting, or for you hard core gamers like my self, id deffnaily reccmond this game.

This game is awesome.

First off this game is great fun. I have spent so many hours playing this that it is not funny. I like this game because you can jump in and get some action. It's not an all out frag game, but that makes it more enjoyable. This isn't a non-stop blaster game, it actually requires a little bit of thinking and patience.
Defend a position or go on the offensive. Fly a plane or drive a tank. Many choices for you to make. Great game. Just gets better with time. This game kept me going hardcore for a year or more. I loved it.

Very nice game to play, since I got hooked on it 2 years ago I haven't stopped playing it since then. Yes, not a lot of maps are provided in the game, but you can easily download different maps from like www.fileplanet.com for free. There are all sort of mods for this game, even a Star Wars mod with Star Wars weapons and vehicles.

Some people say that the bots in single player mode are easy but you can change the level of difficulty and other option and it can get pretty tuff. You want it to be really challenging reduce the ratio between each team like 1:10 and see how tuff it gets. But, it is true playing in multiplayer mode is much exciting especially if it is with friends so you can form groups and decide on tactics.

This is a great game that still provides plenty of fun. Espeically for people who don't have they latest computers. Heck, I do, but I still play this awesome game!

In response to the person who said you need a 9800xt to play the game, AND a gig of ram. HA HA...but im sorry, no. I have a laptop with a 64 meg 9000 series card--not even full AGP speed, and not even a gig of ram, and I play the game at absolute max settings with NO LAG! By the way, my harddrive isn't even 7200rpm. Oh, and you don't need to have Sata to play any game. LMAO

Now yes, you DO NEED to have Atleast 512 megs of ram to play the game well. My old athlon 1.67 Ghz could play the game at low-medium laggy with 256 megs of ram and a crappy 128 meg geforce4 card...but it was horrible. Seriously, if you have an xp computer with less then 512ram, you're missing out on your windows experience.

Fun, but only after adjusting to the lameness

Battlefield 1942:
Single player:
* No gore. A disturbing trend in WW2 games: bloodless war. I guess we can't make our kids think war is cool and send them off to Iraq if we let them see war as hell.
* Horrible enemy AI. Either the bots can't see you and you can shoot them in the back as they run past you, or they see you from so far away that they appear to be only a few pixels high right as they snipe your head off. It seems that the bots have a higher desire to get to the machine gun emplacements than to shoot a potential enemy. If you stand near some machine guns, bots will run past you to get to the guns, and then you can pop them in the head.
* Horrible ally AI. They refuse to push forward. You end up doing all the work with moving your team towards the next control point, which means you get to die over and over from lack of support from your teammates. It also means you need to have a large number of bots set up to keep your control points defended.
* No "reload" feedback. There is absolutely no feedback to tell you that you're out of ammo. No click. No nothing. Your weapon just doesn't fire. You also don't automatically reload when you're out, which might be slightly more realistic, but certainly doesn't increase the fun factor. You must keep your eye on the ammo counter at all times.
* You can pick up different kits, but you can't pick up additional ammo for your current weapon. You have to get to an ammo box.
* Domination type games only: The only type of game you can play is domination, where there are "control points" that each team must control to gain (or in this case, lose) points. There is no deathmatch, capture the flag, rabbit, assault, or any of the other game types that can be found in other multiplayer FPSs.
* Battlefields only. There is no clearing buildings in BF1942. You will be fighting on an open battlefield in the outdoors. There are some simple buildings in Berlin and Stalingrad, but the AI refuses to use them. The enemy will always be outdoors.
* Poor hit detection. I've fired several rounds into an enemy with a sniper rifle and I KNOW I've hit them, but hits aren't registered. Other times, it takes two shots to kill them, or one head shot.
* Impossible to fly planes. Perhaps this is an acquired skill, but I can't get the planes to do anything for me. I end up flying off the map or crashing; I can't get anywhere near a target. The AI seems to use them well enough though.
* Some boats seem to be impossible to exit if you're on them by yourself. Frustrating.
* Disappointing Omaha Beach map. Not even close.

After a while, you get used to these problems, and the game can be fun with the correct difficulty settings for your battles. It takes a lot of experimentation, but it really gets fun after you figure out how to set up the battle properly for the given map (and you don't expect much from the AI). The graphics are usually excellent, with some minor glitches here and there.

* Multiplayer:
Every time I try to play a multiplayer game I get an error message about receiving bad data. I can not join any internet servers. I suspect this is because I have the brand new 1.5 version and most other people haven't upgraded yet. I have yet to try BF1942 at the LAN.

Overall. 2.5 stars. It's fun, but only after experiencing much frustration and disbelief at some of the poor choice in game design that were made. Requires you to learn how to set up the battle parameters correctly to extract enjoyment out of it.

Very disappointing and extremly frustrating

I did not expect THAT much from this game, since I saw it more as a "Help-me-to-get-over-the-waiting-time-for-UT2003", but I have to say, it is fun. Sometimes. Occasionally. Like when you're really trying to defend your Pearl Habor island. Or trying to attack a beach at Normandy. Or walking through the ruins of Berlin, without knowing where the enemies are. In these rare times you get this fun feeling, war games sometimes are succesful in. Yes, it can be fun and thrilling at times. It is a nice idea to the be able to drive tanks or run around as a soldier or drive in a boat or sit behind a big cannon or a flak. The levels are well-made most of the time. BUT...

BUT what sense do some moments of fun have when most of the time you're simply frustrated. Because of the menues that are confusing. Because of the missing of any kind of help or tutorial (besides the ridiculous tool function which only works while you're busy being in battle). Because of the bad-solved handling. Because of the bugs, bugs, bugs. And mainly because of the embarassing AI. Your fellow soldiers spend a lot of time running around in circles (literally) or even better, driving around in circles. They run in wrong directions or just stand around doing nothing, while you're base is attacked. They succeed in running into every enemy fire that they can find. On the other hand your enemies are so good, you rarely have a chance to succeed. They can kill you with one bullet even if they don't even see you. It happens so often that you run over the field, getting killed without the slightest idea who did it. You're never allowed to get a look over the complete battlefield, so it takes you half a mission to get some orientation. The campaing system is absolutely meaningless, since a) if you've lost two missions you're not allowed to go on, b) it is nearly impossible NOT to lose two missions and c) you can leave the campaign and play all missions anyway.

There is so much more to discover. Negative things of course. Finally a game where the screenshot-function makes sense, since you can show your friends the best bugs you've seen. Like jeeps and tanks standing in houses (right in the wall) or on rooftops. Vehicles that are dancing on the ground. Groups of enemies that stand some feet beside you doing nothing but watching the sea. Soldiers who are not getting killed by hitting them with a driving tank, but who instead simply stand on it, driving all along the way.

In multiplayer this game surely can be more fun, but in single player it is impossible to coordinate your fellow soldiers. Of course you have to lose the battle, if every single soldier runs alone into the enemy base, getting shot at the entrance. Or when they repeatedly enter and exit a vehicle, like ten times in 20 seconds. And if you'll ever manage to fly a plane without crashing AND succeed to aim and shoot with it at the same time..., well, then you're a real magician.

Overall, it is fun to play it. It is not fun to pay for it, because if you manage to get any other good battle game into your hands (like RtCW, MoH or UT2003) your brain will eventually delete any memory of this game. Give the game some 3-4 patches and bugfixes and it may be another thing. But given the current status of the game, it is more like a disaster. But nevertheless a disaster you can have fun with. Sometimes. When you're not busy getting that tank down from the roof.

Excellent WWII first-person shooter

Battlefield: 1942 is one of the greatest WWII games I have ever played. The battles reflect real-time battles like Normandy, Stalingrad, and Operation Market Garden. The environments are extremely large. You almost always need a vehicle to travel if you want to get around quickly. There are many vehicles to choose over too. You can get in a GP (Jeep), an APC, and different kinds of tanks. Aircrafts are also available in some levels. The airplanes can be easy to control is you have a joystick but very difficult with a keyboard. So a joystick like a Microsoft Sidewinder or a Logitech joystick is highly recommended. You won't need that much experience in first-person shooters to play this game. The reason being is the game has not been out for a year yet and people are still getting in on the action. This is the complete opposite of the extremely popular Half-Life: Counterstrike which has been out long enough to the point where you cannont find a game without a highly experienced veteran who will kill you faster than you can blink an eye.
If you like WWII shooters like I do than you will absolutely fall in love with this game. There are classes like scouts (snipers), assault men, and engineers. You may also need a fairly fast computer to play this game without any problems. Oh and don't forget to download the patches [online]. The rating is T for teen because of violence but there is not blood.
Once more, this game is fantastic with flaws that can barely be noticed. The rating is T for teen because of violence but there is not blood shooting from your enemy's bodies. I strongly recommend this game for your child if you don't mind the minor violence. And yes, the violence is minor when it comes to graphic depiction.
