Excellent, But Not As Good As The MOH Series

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 4 / 5

I love this game. The action is fast paced, the vehicles are great, and the sounds are awesome! However, the graphics are not the best I have seen, and there is almost no story.

The instant action is really the best part of this game, and it is a blast. Honestly, this game is freedom! You can just walk up to any vehicle or weapon, and use it! I really thought that was fun.

Basically, if you are looking for a WWII FPS that relies heavily on action and explosions, this is your game. However, if you are looking for a game that appeals to your heart, brain, and gaming taste, give Medal of Honor a try.

The Most Fun and Addictive Game I have Ever Played

I have played many online action games (Counter Strike, Tribes2, etc). This is by far the most fun. I love to hop in airplanes an strafe the enemy, parchute out behind enemy lines, and capture control points. Gameplay is balanced perfectly. You are always doing something fun, and are not bogged down with tedium. It combines the best of 1ps action with a great set of vehicles. Way too fun.

Its worse than nicotine!

I don't usually come across a game where i spend as much time as i can on it. This is one of those. I being an experince Counter-Strike player got a real rush out of it. All of my friends and I were really impressed at all the things you could drive, pilot, or navigate. And even more impressed at the ease of it all. So far the only thing i still have troble with is piloting the airplanes because it more realistic than most of its kind. So far this is the best as it gets for a first person shooter.

Excellent Carnage Potential

Battlefield 1942 does not do anything revolutionary, but it does nearly everything that previous war-themed FPS games have done, except better. It is an excellent example of the fantastic possibilities that are presented in multiplayer for broadband users, in number of players, the addition of complex vehicles, and the complexity of play. However, it lacks in accessibility and realism, and so falls short of greatness. But it is still undeniably fun.

What sold me on 1942 (even before I saw screenshots) was the potential to have 64 people playing simultaenously, with a large number of vehicles of every sort in use. While this does not happen often, I have played in one or two 64-person games which were intense and full of carnage. I can do this, because I have a brand-new computer, 2.4 ghz, and am connected to a University network. Many people cannot, unfortunately, so such huge games are rare. But the game is just as enjoyable with 32 players, which appears to be the norm on most servers.

Once I actually got to sit down and fool around with 1942, I found the vehicles to be the best-engineered part of the game. The controls are intuitive and the scripting is solid, I have yet to see a major bug or flaw pop up in a game. Ships beach when you get them too close to shore, Jeeps roll over if you take corners too sharply, and explode if you ram into a tree at full throttle. The planes, which I adore, take some getting used to, but they are fantastically useful, and expand the game significantly. The static defenses, too, are useful and can be destroyed in most cases.

There are five 'kits' in Battlefield for soldiers on each side to pick from, differing only slightly between the Allies and Axis. With so many vehicles in the mix, using the kits in harmony with them is key to engineering a solid team strategy. The radio is fairly well done, allowing communication between team members to usually take place with only two keystrokes and an indicator on the smoothly-wrought minimap. These elements make numerous tactics possible.

Battlefield 1942 is NOT Operation Flashpoint. Soldiers can take a hell of a lot of abuse before they drop, so that you may find yourself spraying bullets at fairly short range to no avail. Also, the environment is fairly static. You cannot destroy vegetation or buildings.

Finally, the single-player mode serves as little but an introduction to multiplayer. This game exists only for multiplayer. If you don't have broadband, forget it. But otherwise, enjoy what is one of the best examples of multiplayer World War Two simulation on the market.

Great if you have broadband + a beefy PC

Battlefield 1942, with the latest patch (1.2) installed, is one of the most thrilling multiplayer games ever made (and I've been playing them since "Pong" came out).

The main attraction of the game is the variety and scale of the levels. This first player shooter models various battles of World War 2, for example Omaha Beach and the battle for Midway. Two teams square off against each other and try to capture all the flags in the territory while killing each other! It's quite a rush to swarm into an area with your teammates, bullets and artillery shells raining around you, trying to survive and capture a flag. There are some other multiplayer modes, but this "conquest" mode is the most played.

In the same 30-60 minute game, you'll drive tanks, fly planes, man battleships and aircraft carriers, and man all sorts of stationary weapons like anti aircraft flak guns, machine gun nests, and coastal guns.

The game stresses gameplay and fun over realism, so it doesn't take that long to figure out how to play. The controls are logical and the operation of the various vehicles and roles you can play (Assault, Medic, Anti-Tank, Engineer, Scout) are easy to figure out.

I haven't tried playing the single player yet because I'm having too much fun playing multiplayer ...Some people have complained about the game, but they probably have one of the following problems:

1) They haven't patched the game to 1.2. The game had lots of problems when it came out, but Electronic Arts/DICE is doing an admirable job patching most of the problems.

2) You have to have a broadband connection!

3) You need a fast computer. If you don't want to wait forever in the level loading screen, you must have at least 512 Mb of memory. You should also have at least a Geforce4 card or equivalent, and a 1 Ghz CPU at minimum.

There is an expansion set coming out on Feb 4, 2003, EA already released a free level ("The Coral Sea"), and there are plenty of servers to play on, so you get a lot of value from this game!

Absolutely Amazing

Battlefield: 1942 is perhaps one of the most immersive and interactive games I have played. With 5 different character classes and over 13 vehicles, you can do almost anything you want. You can get into anything that moves. Both the singleplayer missions and online play are extraordinary. However,if you are interested in playing online, I would also by the expansion, Battlefield: 1942 Road to Rome, as that is what most of the other players are using. The only downside to this game is that you can only truly enjoy it if you have a fast computer, I would reccommend a processor of 2.0 Ghz or greater with 256-512 MB RAM. Overall, an excellent game, and probably the finest war simulation I have ever played.

One of my favorites.

Battlefield 1942 is an excellent game. It has broad flexibility, great player-environment interaction, superb graphics and engrossing historical backing. All things that I look for in a FPS.

It allows players to operate any vehicle or weapon system that you can find. This gives you a much greater sense of freedom than in comparable games like Medal of Honor. The graphics are also a step up when compared to similar games. The video card requirements may be higher than many games, but it is worth it. The best feature of all is the feature that allows you to play on different armies, select different insertion points, and select different player specialties.

Overall BF 1942 is my favorite FPS. If you like flexible and historical games, then this should be top on your list.

awesome, awesome, awesome

Incredible graphics and missions, awesome online play, and neat as far as the history is concerned. I downloaded the Desert Combat edition www.desertcombat.com and that is really great too. The only problem I have with the game is that it takes forever to load (2.53Ghz P4, 256 meg RAMBUS). It is much quicker on my 1.6gzP4 with 512 DDR ram. So, I recommend 512 meg ram to run this game.

By it and you won't regret it if you like first person shooters.

excellent game

This has to be on the top ten 1st person shooter games. It is awsome to put the A.I. level on low and completely abolish the nazi forces. I greatly enjoy using the Artillery on miniscule little soilders in the Pacific Theatre or take down five guys at once with the tanks. There are many "mods" you can download to completely change the game, for example, you can change it to become all modern warfare, or explore as pirates.

PROS: Excellet first person shooter, wide range of maps, excellent vehicles.

CONS: A.I. a little weak, loading times can sometimes be slow, sound could be improved.

OVERALL: I give this 4 out of 5 stars because it has excellent game play, but some small details are lacking.

This game is a twinkee... great taste, no substance.

Two of my favorite types of games are First-Person Shooters and Flight Simulators, naturally this game grabbed me right away and I bought it. I thought it was the greatest thing out there... for the first two weeks then I went back to Day of Defeat....

The Good:
This is a one of a kind game, in the fact that it is the first WWII online game to let anyone pilot or drive any vehicle you can get your hands on. This is also one of the first games to let you play with 64 people at the same time. That is about were the good goes sour.

The Bad:
Yeah vehicles are a good idea, but the physics of the Jeeps, APCs, Planes, tanks... and every vehicle in the game seem skewed. The land vehicles slide all over the place making it tough to manuver on treacherous terrain. After some getting use to it though, you can manage. Playing with 64 people is great, except finding a server with that many people playing is difficult. I have seen maybe 3 or 4 64 player servers with A: maxed out people or B: a good pin,g in the months I have had this game. If you are one of the few gamers without a broadband connection, don't even bother, you don't stand a chance online and the single player AI requires a monster machine to run if you want them to be the least bit challenging. Also, the difficulty levels swing from every bot seeming to have a labotomy, to now they are all suddenly Rambo and you get sniped from all the way across the map by some bot with a pistol named Henry Weiner. The weapon models are all pretty ugly, especially the BAR, which looks like something you'd see in your nephews toy chest. The other thing that irks me about this game is it is a WWII simulation with no M1 Garand... just pitiful.

Buy this game if:
-You have a 2.0+ ghz machine, at least 256 megs of RAM, a 64mb video card, a broadband internet connection, you enjoy poorly done vehicles and physics, and you are a glutton for punishment.

Don't buy this game if:
-You want to have fun. Your better off getting the Day of Defeat mod for Half-life...or you can buy the retail for around [$$].
