The best expansion pack to date.

How often have you gotten an "expansion pack" only to be rewarded with lackluster efforts from a development team that has simply moved on from the title? Brood War delivers almost an entirely new game for less than the original cost. As expansion packs go, this one is about as close to perfect as I've seen.

In addition to ~30 new missions (with each of the three familiar races from StarCraft), you get more multiplayer maps and new units to explore and enjoy (roughly 2 per race). In addition to new units, many existing units have had their abilities enchanced or changed.

Like StarCraft, you can jump into multiplayer on Battle.net and play with up to 8 humans/players. You can only use Brood War against other players who have Brood War (sorry! no mixing versions) -- so make sure your friends pick up a copy as well.

If you liked StarCraft, there's simply no excuse not to own this.

The Best RTS Game ever

With its low requirements and amazingly quick pace Starcraft (and Bw) are IMO the best computer games ever. With Starcraft, you have three races of equal abilities and power but are completely different.

Bw adds to the mix with 6 new units, (Valkyries, Medics [Terran], Devourer's and Lurker's [Zerg], as well as Dark Archon's and Corsair's [Protoss]). On top of that, the Protoss can now access Dark Templar's (though their stats aren't really worth the price and tech) and both Zerg and Terran have new upgrades. BW also includes three new tilesets and three new critters (YAY!)

The races are still even, regardless of what you may have read in some other reviews. Also, all the new units are useful, IMO, except the Dark Archon and Templar (but I'm not a very avid Toss player). Medics make fields of marines and firebats that much more of an annoyance, whereas lurkers will cut infantry down in seconds. Corsairs are quick to fire and good against smaller groups (and their disruption web is awesome when playing a terran tanker), whereas the Valkyrie is amazing for, say tons of Mutas. And the devourers spores help slow down the enemy fire.

With the new upgrades Guardians become less a threat than they previously were to Terrans, and Ultralisk's are muuuch more useful.

The only thing that wasn't improved was the campaign. The story was close to the last, and you could tell who the traitor was and who would die etc. The cutscenes aren't even that great either. And by the end you're left with so few characters, that you find yourself not caring anymore, and wanting Kerrigan to destroy all of them. But the never tiring multiplayer saves the game. And even though there weren't too many new good 8player maps, we still have hunters!

Other than that though, awesome game, and I sure can't wait until Blizzard releases news about Starcraft 2! (If they do:D)

Awesome

I bought this game as soon as it arrive in my country and I have never stopped playing it since. It equilized the power of the three races and made the game more addictive than ever. It is a must for all that have only played the original starcraft but it is also recommended to those that don't know what starcraft is, to buy blizzards battle chest, with both the original and expansion starcraft plus a strategy guide. GET IT.

the best game ever!!

Star craft brood war is a great game. I have been playing it for about 5 years. In star craft, you choose from the races: protoss, terran, or zerg. You choose your race, and then you start the game. In the game you build your own civilization and create units, then you go kill the other players. All the races have their own advantages and disadvantages against each other, which is one of the things that make this game great. The protoss are more advanced and are powerfull, but they are much more expensive, and they build slower. The terran race consists of humans. They are not as expensive as the protoss, but i find them a little more challenging to play with. Then there is the zerg, my favorite. I like the zerg because they build fast, and they are not so expensive. The main advantage of the zerg against both races, is that if you attack someone and all of your units die, you can very quickly build them back up again, and repeat your attack untill you kill that enemy (but i would always keep a few extra units at your base, just incase you get countered by your victims allies.) In Star craft brood war, there are also new units. The new units for the protoss are the Dark archons, which can do mind controll and a few other tricks, and corsairs, wich attack enemy air units. The new units for terran are the valkarie air frigit, and the medic. the valkarie is great against enemy air untis; it shoots rapid missiles at them. The medic is probably the best new unit. With a medic you can rapidly heal your marines and other ground units, and when you are on the net, you can heal your allies units as well. The zerg also have 2 new units: The devourer and the lurker. The devourer by far has the best air attack, but on the other hand, it cant attack ground units. The lurker is another superior unit, (especially if your enemy doesnt have any detectors.) A luker buries itself, and when enemy units walk by, they are torn apart by the lurkers spikes. Then again, lukers and devourers have a shared disadvantage; they both build slow. In conclusion, I highly recomend Star craft Brood War.

Exciting Strategy Game (Online Multi-player) Expansion Pack!

I just installed the "Brood War" expansion pack, and all I can say is "Oh, yeah.....bring it on." Brood War gives the StarCraft player(s) More Options, The Zerg (enemies) are even MORE Powerful < yikes ! > & the Terrans have Medics to help you survive....for a while. All the Upgrades are available on Battle.net, as well (user must D/L the Battle.net Upgrade, after installing the expansion pack, again). At start-up, the Player must choose between the original Starcraft, or the Brood War version.

StarCraft is an Exciting, Stress-relieving Strategy Game--with Online, Multi-player options. This is not your typical "hack n slash" video game. Players must use Strategy, building skills / building repair, Upgrades, fast-paced fortification and building of a base.... relocation of "buildings," by flying them to new Energy Sources...and patience. Oh, and did I mention fending-off Nasty, Acid-Spitting, Demonic-looking Aliens, while you are *attempting* to build your fortifications ?

Ready to Squash some "Bugs ?" IM your friends and go-online, with Battle.net (or, just meet people online, via Battle.net)--the Multiplayer option allows your friends to join you against the Computer, or each-other. This is Great stress relief, for after work & chores.

This game is rated for "Teens," but nearly all the adults I know own a copy --plus, the "StarCraft: Brood War" expansion pack.

If the product is from "Blizzard," it's all good !!!

For the price, you simply cannot go wrong. If you love Strategy Games and you love blowing stuff up, StarCraft will become your new addiction. Soon, all of your "Gamer" friends will be IMing you, saying, "Ready to squash some Bugs ?!"

More than an expansion pack

Starcraft was the first strategy game that I played all the way through without cheating. There are two reasons for this: the difficulty increases from mission to mission at a perfect pace, and the story doesn't just occur between the missions.
And the story is what I really loved this game for, but at the end of Starcraft, nothing was resolved, we'd just entered the thick of the plot.
Which is why Brood War is so fantastic. Most expansion packs have either no story, or some lateral story that has little to do with the overall plot. Brood War is more like a sequel than an expansion.
The main character of Brood War is definately Kerrigan, the zerg secret weapon from Starcraft has now gained control of most of the zerg hordes. The story is fundamentally the machinations of Kerrigan.
On the Terran side, the forces from Earth have finally tracked down the colonists they sent off so many years ago, and have decided to take charge. However, they too, get caught up in Kerrigans quest for power.
The only flaw in the game was the somewhat contrived Protoss plot. While some elements of Kerrigan cementing her rule come into the Protoss story, most of it has to do with tracking down and capturing two 'magical' gems that have not featured in the story at all before now.
The climax of the game is much better than the climax to the original Starcraft. Where Starcraft ended on a 'to be continued' note, this game provides closure, but also says 'definately to be continued'.

What makes this game truly great is that the level design remains right up to standard. The difficulty curve also continues exactly from where it left off, so that by the time you reach the monstrously hard final level, you're ready for it.
So, if you don't own a copy of Brood War yet, get it as soon as possible. If you don't even own a copy of Starcraft yet, go straight to the battle chest, and kill two birds with one stone.

This is one of the greatest games around

I have had Starcraft for about 2 years, and I have enjoyed every minute of it. The gameplay is excellent, and everything about it is great. The expansion is even better, it balances out the three different races in the game with new characters, and new missions. But to get the ultimate gameplay, Battl.net is the best. You interact live with other Starcraft lovers, and can play to your hearts content. This game is the best one that I have seen in a long time.

Can't do without this one!

Do you own Starcraft and want to know if you should get theexpansion pack? You should. Stop reading and buy it right now.

For the money, this add-on is as good as they get. Brood Wars takes off where Starcraft ended, and adds a bunch of new units. The Zerg now have lurkers, huge creatures that burrow under the earth and launch their spines up through the ground. Twelve of these guys can tear apart any base in short order. Terrans gain medics, among other things, who heal your marines as they fight. Great for using stim packs. The Protoss add Corsairs, among other units, that can neutralize turrets to get into a terran base.

If you own Starcraft, you must own Brood Wars. It's the perfect add-on to the perfect game.

Great expansion of a great game

The expansion pack Brood War pushes the already great Starcraft game even further. A few new units have been added to the old spectacle. The Terrans have got a Medic, a helpful addition because their soldiers aren't particularly strong, and they also have the new Valkyrie plane, a quick assault plane. The Zerg have the Lurker, a nasty thing that can hide underground (like nearly all Zerg units) and releases its sharp spines as soon as the enemy comes too close. This unit is an excellent way to protect the Zerg bases, so that these become even more hard-to-capture strongholds. There's also the flying Devourer, a huge monster that makes the Zerg much stronger in the air than they were before (those Scourges aren't that strong, after all). But it is the Protoss who have received the most interesting additions: the great Dark Templar units that were available sometimes in the missions of the original, have now become standard units. This fast stealth attacker (he can only be seen by detector units) balances the lack of strong small infantry with the Protoss. And: just like with the familiar High Templars, two Dark Templars can fuse to a Dark Archon, a great unit that can mind-control enemies (probably, the Yuri units in Red Alert 2 have borrowed this idea). This can be an immensely powerful addition to the battle, though, as with so much in Starcraft, you have to use these units carefully. They cost a lot, after all! There are also new campaigns, with again some of the well-known great animation movies and a new, great story (And believe it or not, Sarah Kerrigan returns once again!). I find the campaigns generally harder than those in the original, but that's only good news. This add-on just has everything of the original, and then even better. Not to be missed!

The perfect expansion to the perfect game

Starcraft is by far the best strategy game created in Earth. Good graphics that can easily run in low-equipped PCs, an awesome sound and interface, Starcraft can proportionate hours and hours of diversion, mainly if you play in the battle.net.
The expansion added many interesting things like new types of terrain and new units, and sure it's worth the price, even because the game is very cheap.
The game is probally the best game to play via net or lan, and only Counter Strike can compete against Starcraft in the subject multiplayer interface (acess and entertaiment).
An awesome map editor (the best of any game ever created) does not let that you stop playing only because you won all the entire campaign and sure, you can easily obtain new maps by playing in new maps (that you don't have, of course), and sure, the map is all yours to play.
The only thing that I didn't liked very much was the addiction of the Dark Archon to the Protoss and one of his powers, Mind Control, that just let you have control over whatever unit in the map you want, and that is not fair in NET games, because one can take a SCV or drone of yours and build and have control over a second (or even over the three races) race, and that is not fair, I have the impression that the Protoss are "superior" (but that is because I am a Zerg player, although I play very well with all three races).
But this is the only annoying problem. If you have Starcraft, the expansion is worth the price. And if you don't have both, you don't know then what you are missing...
