Holy cow! I'm just doggone scared!

I never believed that a video game on a computer screen could scare me like this one did. The story is amazing, the graphics are awesome, and the sound effects are the scariest thing I have ever heard. This game completely blew my mind. I have played it all the way through at all difficulty levels. A game you can keep coming back to. If you play this game at night with the lights off and the volume up, you'll need to clean your shorts within ten minutes. Leave it to Clive Barker!

This game was to much to handle. I finished it but be prepared for long hours! There were certain points I could'nt take the tension no more and had to shut it down. You dont know what can come around any corner, you will run into a room and nothing is in there then you pass a mirror and there is something floating behind you. You jump in your seat just like a thriller movie. The graphics are fantastic. There were moments I had to pause and take in the scenery like I was on vacation!
But heed my warning this game is hard! Even on easy.

Clive Barker is a genius. This game should be made into a movie.

aaaaaahhhhhhhh!

Without a doubt, this is the most terrifying game I've ever played. Undying is a true FPS, with a feel similar to half-life or Soldier of Fortune. The plot and movements through the game are linear, yet still intriguing. Unlike Half-life, the game contains no tongue-in-cheek humor to lighten the atmosphere. What you do get, instead, is the ultimate haunted mansion and more. The architecture is disturbingly stunning with great attention to detail and captures the feel of an English manor with creepy room after room. The ambient sound is equally disturbing with incredible 3d effects of eerie children's laughter, the mournful wailing of the wind, and the cries of hungry beasts echoing from around the next corner. Just like a great horror flick, the game keeps the surprises coming with just enough irregularity between the "BOO'S!" to keep you off balance and on the edge of your seat - never knowing what to expect in the next room. I play the game at night with just one light on in the house and have jumped in fright more than once. The rest of the time, I spend looking over my shoulder. Unlike the original Resident Evil - what I also consider a scary game - the voice acting is top notch and very professional. The experience is also quite a bit more on the ghostly side as opposed to a mutant virus turning people into zombies. From time to time during the game, you will glimpse visions or hear sounds that can't hurt you, but they will freak you out. The 1st person perspective adds to the terror, since you feel like it's YOU trapped in this nightmare. I haven't gotten all the way through, yet, but so far Clive Barker and the programming team have created a truly bone chilling masterpiece, so suspenseful and intense that I can only play 30 minutes to an hour each night before I have to quit and go hide under the covers. Great stuff!

Best, most disturbing game since HALF-LIFE

My favorite PC game of all time is HALF-LIFE. At the risk of sounding like a nutcase, HALF-LIFE actually disturbed my sleep paterns, it caused me violent nightmares and ate up any free time I had for the time it took for me to complete (the only FPS I have ever beaten without cheating, I might add). Since then, I have been waiting for HL2 which is inevitable.

Enter UNDYING. As a huge Clive Barker fan - both his books and his painting - I was excited to hear that he was involved with a video game and nervous that it would end up like Stephen King's 13 - talk about horror! I knew very little about the game but the previews were encouraging.

As soon as I loaded it I knew I was in for less sleep, mouse induced wrist cramps and general VGFS (Video Game Fatigue Syndrome).

Visually: Amazing. The environments I have seen so far are fluid and believable. The special effects and lighting are amazing.

Sound: Even better than the graphics! The monsters scare the hell out of you, the positioning of sound add to the eeriness of the location and the soundtrack is movie-caliber.

Overall: The monsters and gameplay will make you jump out of your seat. A quiet, unassuming walk down a corridor is interrupted by a ghost or monster and it is done better than any slasher film you've ever seen. The only complaint is the fact that the tension is too often broken by loading of new areas (but this does not kill the game by any means). And the only reason I gave it 4/5 stars is because I haven't completed the game yet - I still have a life although I can see this sucking up a lot of it.

If you liked HALF-LIFE this is the perfect game. If you like Clive Barker's horror style - this is the perfect game. If you don't like being scared - buy something else.

Great Game with terrifying musick

I usually don't like FPS (First Person Shooting Games), but this games I like because of the horror. The music and sound effects in the game give me the creeps, plus the game has excellent graphics (A bit dark, but heck it's a horror game). There are two reason that stop me from giving Undying 5 stars :

1. The game area is so huge that it would be nice if it gave you the chance to map it (like Diablo I & II), because it gets a little annoying going over the same area time after time.

2. It seems linear at times, meaning that you are basically following a path that is set to the game. Now it would be nice to have subplots and have the option to go on to a different stories.

I never buy gore movies (Aliens for example) but I do like horror stories (Stephen King) and a horror movie that will scare you but not gross you out. So this game while it has it's gorey moments has one additional thing that makes it a good game, it is a thinking game not just a shoot'em up game.

One Final note, this game might give people with low end computers a problem, so my advice is to make sure you have enough computing power (It runs great on an AMD Athlon 950 Mhz).

Maybe the Best Horror Game Ever on the PC

When it was released, Clive Barker's Undying didn't have astronomical sales figures like the Sims, and it never carried a heavy fan following like Half-Life. As a matter of fact, EA had planned on releasing an expansion for this game but cancelled it after poor sells numbers. But this game has to be one of the most underrated titles to ever grace the PC. I believe the popular game reviewer Gamespy even listed it in its all-time top 25 underrated titles. That's a shame because many gamers will never know the terrific game they missed. Undying is a combination first-person shooter and horror game and no shooter has ever effectively combined both genres since. It's been a few years since Undying was released but its graphics can still compete with current games and the game adds a superb compliment of artwork and sounds to top off the experience. And that's what this game is -- an experience! If you don't have headphones or an expensive set of PC speakers, you truly do miss out on the experience of playing this game. The giant haunted estate in which your character spends plenty of time investigating rumors of the paranormal for his old war buddy are memorable gaming moments and the game spooked me so much I even caught myself glancing behind my shoulder when I played it at night. A wonderful game with a top notch story to go with it as well as a creative weapons and magic system, I recommend anyone who hasn't played Clive Barker's Undying yet to pick it up before it's gone forever.

not near as good as it could have been

So when EA was having some problems fleshing out their latest first-person shooter, they decided that it might be a good idea to ask famed horror writer Clive Barker for some assistance. Barker, seemingly always eager to find new ways to scare people, jumped at the chance. So what's the end result like? First, lets talk about the design of the game. It sure looks nice enough. UNDYING is a visually gratifying game. A lot of scary sounds and noises will also be streaming out of your speakers; There's no fault in the audio department either. It's also easy to spot Barker's influence. People who've read some of his novels or seen some of his films will easily recognize Barker's twisted imagination. This is certainly a great kick for fans of his. But in the end UNDYING winds up falling short on the game play side of things; And as always, it's game play above graphics. First off, the developers seems to have forgotten the golden rule of scaring people. For as Alfred Hitchcock once said, the greatest scare is waiting for the murder and not the murder itself. Well, Hitchcock might have said something like that and it sure does ring true. UNDYING starts out spooky enough, but suddenly you're bombarded by fiends from all sides and you quickly find yourself too busy killing monsters to be afraid of them. This problem also tears away the story's credibility. The mansion (most of the game takes place in a huge Victorian manor) is filled with servants and I can't see why any one of the would stay there if the house was packed to the brim with monsters. I also didn't like the weaponry in UNDYING. I like weapons to resemble real life weapons, and one instalment in your arsenal is a golden dragonhead that spews bolts of ice. I mean, what's that? Apparently, Barker talked a lot about lending credibility to the characters in the game; They shouldn't have refrained from adding a bit of credibility to other aspects of the game as well. So the end result, and my conclusion, is that UNDYING is a game that's certainly enjoyable enough, but it's nowhere near where it should be.

OH MY LOOOOOORRRRRDDDDAAAAA!

This is probably my fourth first person shooter that I have played, and it is way up there on the list.

I absolutely loved Deus Ex and I find that Undying does not match its unparalleled interaction and character enhancement, however, for anything that it lacks, Undying's graphics and story line make up for it big time. Thats why I am giving it 4 1/2 stars.

While I was skeptical about the other reviews expressing that this game is really scary, I am now a believer! This game is really scary. I have never experienced anything like that while playing a game. Turn down the lights, put up the sound and get ready. The combination of weapons, magic, and graphics make for an exciting and immersive experience.

If you enjoy first person shooters and are interested in a serious adrenalin rush, this game has got your name on it.

Sweet Game...scary as hell

Wow, great game!
Scared... me from start to finish....
A First Person Shooter with a nice twist...you can use both hands at the same time (also big points cause you're left handed....hehe)
Fast paced - there were times when I wanted to take it slow and explore like you can do in most fps's but was just constently hounded by evil creatures....awesome! kept the action going and had to go back to the areas later to explore.
Gets a bit repetitious like all FPS but the story really keeps this game interesting.
Great graphics, eerie settings and hellish creatures, you just can't lose.

You're the Star (or Victim) in an Intense Horror Movie

... This is one tense, scary game. Not scary in the slasher sort of way, but scary in the intense, suspensful, what-horrible-ungodly-thing-is-going-to-jump-out-at-me-next-in-this-dark-family-crypt sort of way. And it's a lot of fun because you get a palpable sense that you're shooting and spellcasting for your survival, not just because it's a shooter. If you can bear the suspense and fear (and enjoy it), get this game. It's a bargain now, and better than most full-priced shooters, mystery, or adventure games.
