I think it's rather funny to hear people proclaiming the depth of MK:DA to be something ground breaking, and yet... where's the high level competiton?

Mortal Kombat has always suffered from some pretty key quirks that has always made it's franchise, and Midway itself, a less successful and admireable name. Every fighter has two stances and a weapon stance- this'll make for really deep and intresting gameplay, right? Well, it would, if it weren't for the fact that, you know, every fighter has two stances and a weapon stance. MK:DA constricts the entire game in the, well, exact same way the entire Mortal Kombat series has always been constricted- the game is mind-numbing bland. Everyone is indentictal, and the only reason that certain characters rise to top tier is merely because thier variations of fireball/dragonpunch/teleport/what-have-you take prioreity over others. Now you simply have to add MK:DA's dial-a-combo to the list.

Novelty wears out after a while, and IMO, everything about this game absolutely screams novelty. Mortal Kombat has never been known for the words /deep/ or /strategic/, it's been known for off-the wall fatalities and for congress using it as thier proof that video games are satantic. For all it's sloppiness, Tekken 4 and Soul Calibur 2 are still being played professionally. Comparisions to Viruta Fighter 4:Evo's eye-twicthing depth should be completely non-existant.

Let's face it, the SNES MK games were all watered down versions of fireball vs. anti-air fights from Capcom and SNK games, and now we have MK:DA, which has graduated from the SNES only in the sense that it's a watered down version of Namco's Poke/Turtle system, which wasn't something to be that proud of to begin with. Even the only thing that actaully seperates this series from the rest- fatalities- are restrictd to only one per-character, and are rather boring and thrown-in simply because people listen to what thier told. Much like everything else in this game.

MK:DA stands as a testament that if you take a lot of the same and make a /lot more of it/, then proclaim an upgrade, that people will gobble it up. Everything this title suposingly has to offer has been done and out-done, and until there are some national tournaments or, hell, Evo 2004 matches or something, I'll stand by my statement that MK:DA is the perfect title for button-mashers and people that don't like substance with thier fighting games.

An Absolute Disgrace...

I can't believe how terrible this game is... The creators apparently decided that Mortal Kombat wasn't working anymore, so they decided to try to rip off the Virtua Fighter engine and throw in the Mortal Kombat cast...... the result is disgusting...
Don't get me wrong.. I loved MK1 and 2... But this isnt even a mortal kombat game imo...
The graphics are terrible and blocky.. pastel comic-book garbage.. what happened to the motion captured characters from one and two?
The gore/blood just looks rediculous now.. it drools off the enemies in gallons if you so much as slap them in the face... and it looks like worms now for some strange reason...
The fatalities are also completely silly and overlong.. they've turned into real-time cinemas... They remind me of the 'summon guardian spirits' from the Playstation Final Fantasy games... remember how much fun those were to watch over and over and over again? it doesnt really help that each character has only one to choose from. It also doesnt help that theyre just plain stupid.
I dont even know where to start with the shoddy controls in this game. For some reason they felt it would give the game depth if they gave each character 3 different stances.... which would be great it each stance was warranted, but they could have easily have crammed all the moves from all the different stances into one... The basic attacks are pathetic... the only way to really assault your enemy is to punch in a dial-a-combo sequence.
The juggling system is so non-intuitive its infuriating.. you can apparently juggling your enemy three times.. the training mode actually teaches you to use the same move all three times to juggle your opponent.
BTW, the training mode (called Konquest mode (oooh, how clever, they used a K!!!)) is pretty terrible as it never gets in depth past teaching you a few basic combos. It does however, make you pracitce backing away from your enemy and moving fowards. It also makes you practice drawing 80 pints of blood from your enemy in under 60 seconds, which is a skill you won't be needing to play this abysmal game.
Juts to throw it in there, but you cant attack when you jump backwards...
Half the time you sidestep your subsequent move misses the character youre aiming at.. I have no idea why...
The recovery time for nearly any move is WAY too long...
The result of this last point is that the fighting in this game basically breaks down to blocking an attack from your opponent and then dialing in a combo before he can block...
I could go on for hours... BTW, its gonna take you HOURS to unlock the nine characters in the game, the Krypt system (where you earn koins from winning matches which you spend to open koffins, some of which contain characters, some of which contain unfunny jokes or pictures of the MK staff getting down and having a good time!! woo yee haw!!!) is rediculous...
I could go on with a list of what they needed to do to make this game better, but I don't have enough space. And I just don't care anymore. I hope this game flops and they kill this series.
I've been reading these over-positive reviews and I can't help but think theres alot of people out there who REALLY NEED to like this game... its frankly terrible.. Buy Virtua Fighter 4 or Tekken 4... if you already have those, get Dead or Alive.. if you already have that too, then buy a game thats not a fighting game... I wish I'd bought Metroid Fusion instead of this POS.. maybe I can convince the store to take it back...

A Deadly Alliance with some flaws

This is an awesome game with some great graphics, sounds, and artistic moves! You'll like the fact that each character has three fighting styles; the third one being with a weapon. You can switch through each fighting style anytime you want during your match!

There is also a whole lot of blood, as with all of the Mortal Kombat games. The game is in 3D, allowing your character to dash left or right to avoid a hit. The stages are greatly detailed, as well as the characters themselves. You can unlock extra characters, and unlock alternate costumes for these characters too.

I was very disappointed with some flaws that I have encountered with this game:

1) There is only one fatality per character. I was expecting two to three fatalities per character.

2) The graphics are extremely detailed when it comes to the stages, characters, and fighting styles, however the graphics for the fatalities are weak.

3) Some of the fatalities are repetitive with some characters - for example: Jax and Sonya both end up stomping their opponent's head.

4) There are no fatalities associated with the stages. If you remember the first Mortal Kombat, there was a stage where the characters fought on a bridge over a pit of spikes. You had the ability to uppercut your opponent, causing them to fall into the pit.

5) The classic uppercut move is only limited to some characters. One of the best moves in the Mortal Kombat series was the uppercut move - where you crouch and then uppercut your opponent into the air.

Despite these flaws, I still gave this game 4 stars because it is fun to play! It is worth spending the money for this one!

Not for the casual fighter.

Herein are PROS, CONS, PERSONAL PREFERENCE ISSUES (which is probably the most important part to read if you're not a die-hard fan), and a PARENTAL WARNING.

...*PROS:*...

The graphics are wonderful and as intricate as I've seen on a fighting game. Just about every move is fluid and punctuated with just-the-right grunt, snap, and splash of blood.

The fighting styles make it a thinking player's fighting game, in that you have to learn your opponent and switch your fighting style to meet and beat their challenge.

The combo system is more-or-less the same as in the previous games, but much more expansive. All of the combos, regular attacks, and special moves are listed under a pause menu option for easy reference.

The Krypt, where you unlock secrets, has kept me busy for weeks--an excellent way to keep a fighting game alive (even though this one doesn't need it.) You start with 12 fighters and a handful of arenas. You must unlock 9 more characters, 2 hidden characters, a handful of incredible (and interactive) backgrounds, and an alternate costume for everyone.

For those seeking a challenge, the computer AI increases its percentage of difficulty as you play in arcade mode. If the early opponents weren't a problem, the last 4 or 5 will actually learn how you play, and abuse your weak points, rather than stick to a preset pattern.

It takes awhile to master each character, even with the elaborate training/story mode. I'm up to mastering my 4th character now (out of 21,) and I've had the game for about a month.

The fatalities are gorier than ever, with a couple of the fighters struggling to rip your head off or pull your spine out for a few tugs before actually pulling it off/out.

The intro movie tells the main plotline of the story. It's very impressive, both by the writing and the imagery.

You can make a profile for yourself, which you load with your personalized code. This means you and a friend can keep tabs on winning/losing percentages, personal monetary gain, and laps around the world (how many times you've beaten the game).

Two player mode allows a handicap to be set, arenas to be selected, and wages to placed with your money (which you earn in your training and arcade modes) on the upcoming fight.

Lastly, some weapons can be lunged into your opponent. You'll watch them bleed (and lose life while fighting) until a round ends.

...*CONS:*...

Though some of the fatalities are just awesome, there are some that are just... I don't have a word for it. Quan Chi stretches your neck out and you fall over dead. Pfft. There is also only one fatality per person, whereas the 3 previous games contained 2 each, and often times other bonuses (which I simply may not have found yet in this game.) But I'm certain there's only 1 fatality per person.

Also, they put a lot of work into the realism of the game, but missed little annoying things like when a second or third round begins while one person has a weapon stabbed into them, the weapon just disappears and the blood stops pouring just as the new round begins. Given the detail they've thrown into everything else, it's a question why this was overlooked.

Possibly the biggest let-down that undeserved this game it's 5-star rating is the lack of cgi endings. The endings are narrated by Raiden's voice, with two pictures. Two still images, one for the first half of Raiden's speech, the other for the second. The story itself is wonderful and expansive, encompassing loose ends from all the previous games, but the still-life could have--SHOULD have been animated, as done in the intro movie. Even MK 4 had video endings. The best you'll get in this game is unlocking video 'tests' from the preproduction phase of this game. It's a sad alternative, but the only one.

Other than the let-down at the end of the game, the other cons can be overlooked, which is why I really wanted to make this a 4.5, but was DENIED!This game takes time. It's not a sit-down-and-beat-em-up figher. You have to study, learn your characters, and memorize combinations, develop a range of techniques, and get it to the point where you react on instinct. When I say I've 'mastered' 4 characters, I mean that I can use them without thinking anymore, which is something you can't do and win when you first start playing. You can win a few rounds with just one or two techniques, but after that it's history for your character. You can't casually use special moves either. They will sidestep, reverse, block, and counter you.

All in all, this game is the best (and possibly last) fighting game I'll ever purchase. I quit playing them awhile ago because I got more into games with substance (which do exist, yes).

...*ATTENTION PARENTS:*...

Keep this game away from stupid kids. Smart kids will know it's fake. Or... that was a REAL vampire biting a REAL cybernetic ninja. And yes, flaming skull-headed people DO exist, often times summoning hellfire from the ground to eliminate their foes.

I will admit that I was somewhat skeptical of this title at first. Now I'm hopelessly in love with it. It started as a taboo interest (I used to be a devout Virtua Fighter fan, any other fighter was blasphemous in my eyes) that blossomed into devout loyalty. This game was a very pleasant surprise and definetely surpassed my low expectations.

The fighting system in MK:DA is a lot more complex than previous MKs, with 3 different, unique stances for each of 21 characters. Still, it doesn't have the deep, intricate fighting system that Virua Fighter has, instead it has projectiles and weapon stances. If that sounds like a digression from the sublime heights of Virtua Fighter's stardom than you've probably interpreted it correctly; but that's not necessarily a bad thing. MK:DA doesn't try to improve on the best names in the fighting series; it's merely trying to create a new name for itself and offer something a little more different. The fighting is more direct and straightforward; you don't have to completely understand every punch to get the job done (though knowing does help).

Unlike previous installments, the controls for each fighter really do vary, and that's not just considering their special moves. Almost every character has unique stances and moves; no more crouching uppercuts and foot-sweeps across the board. You'll actually have to learn to fight with each character individually to be effective; a somewhat novel concept in the MK univers.

The new gameplay and the loads of new content to unlock (hidden characters, stages, storylines, etc.) gives the game high playability for the solo player and is even more addicting with friends, expecially once you've gotten all the characters unlocked for kombating.

The only reason I would recommend against getting this title is if you dont' like gore (which you can turn off); MK:DA definetely entails the amount of blood and guts that Mortal Kombat is legendary for. However, if you're like me and you were initially dissuaded from this title because of the blasphemous, unsophisticated gameplay from previous MK titles, then worry not, because that's all been improved here. The controls are many times more sophisticated. Definetely give this one a shot if you're not faint of heart.

A good game but the Fatalities stink!!!

This is a fairly entertaining addition to the Mortal Komabat series. The 3D is basically 2D with the optionof stepping up or down to dodge punches. This makes the game pretty easy to play which is nice for newer players. Each fighter as two fighting styles and a weapon which allows maximum damage but also makes you more vulnerable to enemy attacks. The characters are pretty cool but the fatalities are just plain lame. Some of them are just trying too hard to be gory and just end up looking like cartoons. For example, Johnny Cage rips out three organs but they all look the same. One major complaint is that my own favorite character Liu Chang is killed in the opening so his character is not available in this game. On the plus side, Deadly Alliance has tons of extras, a crypt of over six hunderd unlockable pictures, videos, characters, arenas, etc. It also has a profile creator which allows you to keep a running total on your win loss percentage against your friends. Not the best fighting game out there but a good one with plenty of entertainment value.

This game is not for the faint of heart. I had fun with this game from the moment I picked up the controller - a lot of fun. If you play it for longer you will be rewarded with just about everything you wanted from a Mortal Kombat video game and then some.

Characters GUSH blood as they are hit while faces turn black and blue with the abuse. If you don't start feeling self conscious about the abuse you dealing out then something is wrong with you. The game play is great...finally a 3d MK world! The next best feature is the ability to cycle through multiple fighting styles for each character. Every character has a couple of hand to hand modes with completely different moves along with one style using a weapon. You have got to try stabbing your opponent with a knife (use R1). The knife just sticks in them while their health slowly drains and they attempt to seek vengeance. And the fatalities. Do I have to mention them? I get queezy when I do...but I have to say something about them. I have seen only 3 and they are Gruesome with a capital G. Spikes sticking into peoples' heads, then being yanked with such force as to force decapitation!

But it's not all blood and guts. As Al Bundy once said, "the breasts may be fake, but boy do they shake." There some serious feminine curiosities flopping around here. Don't get too entranced, she'll beat the heck out of you while you are staring. Choose a woman fighter and put the game in practice mode and just start moving and jumping around.

Seriously a great game. Better than Tekken 4 by far. A definite must for the fighting game fan. Mortal Kombat is back, BABY!! YEAH!!

My precious sweet Frost, how I long for your icy breath down my spine. You are perfect in every way. It is only with you I can defeat the Moloch Monster. It is only with you I can defeat the Alliance. But alas, you are too evil for your own good as your character ending portrays.

You are as beautiful as a Colorado winter. How I thrilled when I unlocked your alternate costume. Your cleavage, face, and lovely buttocks all revealed as you kick, throw, and freeeeeze. You have the face of a snow angel, the deadly touch of frostbite, and the moves of a white tiger.

Your back kick revealing your thong is my favorite move because your icy ghetto booty is large and firm. It's so well rounded, like an igloo. Your deadly X,X,Y,Y, up Y is a match for any attacker. And you are oh so sexy with your ice daggers, no opponant can withstand your X,X,X,X followed by the A,A,A.

I love you Frost, be mine you snow nymph. I kiss the feet of the icy ground you tread upon. I surrender to you.

I looked at every preview, every screen shot and this is not wat any1 would expect. It revolutionizes Mortal Kombat. I mean all the 2-D games were fine but then it got really dumb by the time it got to MK gold and MK4, but MK Deadly Alliance is better than all the games put 2gether.each fighter has 3 of his/hers own fighter style with different moves 4 each. the gameplay looks awesome. the characters look outstanding , well there is nothing else i can say other than WOW! I want 2 see Tekken or Street Fighter beat this game. and 4 all u die hard MK fans, but have a gaming system not PS2, this is also 4 XBOX, Gamecube, and Gameboy Advance. 4 christmas, 4 those parents who r shopping 4 a very good game 4 ur kids this will b the game they will play 4 many monthes 2 come.
