Best to consider what the retail version will hold

I've played DAOC as well as Asheron's call and a few others and, to be honest, this one seems as though it is a better version of them . The graphics are far superior and the classes, as well as the spells, are similar with a distinct anime flair. To this point, though, realize that the game is being beta tested with patches available almost every week. To judge the game now could be a mistake on a number of levels. Best to watch for when the game comes out and read reviews written after that date.

TERRIBLE!

I bought this game the other night to sort of broaded my horizons and see what else was out there. The game was 20 bucks at the store that I bought it at, so I figure....it can't be THAT bad right? I mean the game is gorgeous. And it is. The artists did a great job at what they do, but the desigers should all be fired, because this game is just awful.

First of all (and this set me off, right away), this game offers ZERO key customization! I got news for your developers out there...point and clicking for an eternity is NOT FUN. If you had allowed me to map my movement to W,A,S, and D like, oh I dunno, *every other game on the planet*, I might have attempted to sit through this crap. Not only can you not remap the keys, but there is no option to invert the mouse. So anyone who is used to that option will have to just get used to completely switching gears with this one. And yes....one might say "well, key binds and control options seem kind of petty to drop a game for right"? Well, not in my opinion, but I'll give you that for a couple seconds.....

How's this, then? I walk out into the open and within 5 seconds someone walks up to me and kills me. Yup, this is a free-for-all PvP game, and no where does it say on the package that they do not offer different server rulesets. Okay that sucks. I play World of Warcraft as well, and I love that game. They give you the option of a PvE server (person versus environment) or a PvP server (player vs player). If you dont want people attacking you, you can pick the PvE. Here's the catch, though....I *LOVE* PvP, I just think WoW's PvP is better. You are still safe until around lvl 20, when you have to start going into "contested territories" that are faction vs faction pvp. This is perfect, because you still can get killed by someone way higher than you, but after 20 levels you at least know the game.

I gotta tell ya, it REALLY sucked not having any clue what to do with this game and already someone was killing me. So not fun.

If you want a fantasy MMO, I highly just recommend World of Warcraft. Its just a better game, flatout. Anyone who defends this piece of garbage either only cares about the big-breasted dark elf sluts or is obviously an employee of NCSOFT. Because this game is literally the worst MMO I have ever played. I could have taken my 20 bucks and thrown it down the toilet and I would have felt like I spent it better.....

P.S. I take that back. It was worth the 20 bucks to see the absolutely ridiculous run animation that the dark elf female uses. Her boobs, apparently, weigh a ton each, because when she runs she bends over as if the gravity from her breats is driving her forth as she sticks her arms out like an airplane. Its just absolutely silly....whoever thought that looks cool should also be fired.

Good Game, Rough Start

Had I written this review in my first week of playing, I would have given it 1 star. It is very tough to start out and get going. However, after you hit level 20 (took me 26 hours of play to get to 20) the game really picks up. You can't judge an MMORPG by the first 20 hours of play. So if you think you are interested in this game, be ready for the time to get to level 20. As for the Graphics, they are stunning if you have a machine that can run them properly. if you don't have a P4 2.0 Ghz or better with at least a 32MB video card then don't waste your time. I run it on my P4 2.4 GHz with the Nvidia Geforce 4 MX440 and it runs okay. My Brother runs it on his 3.2 ghz with 128mb video card and it is beautiful. Overall I really enjoy this game, I just rated it lower because of how boring the startup is.

Not Worth It in Long Run

After playing Open Beta mainly on Lionna becoming a 21 lvl Elf Wizard... I've come to the conclusion that though this game is graphically stunning its dull. With the prevalence of Bots or Macros running its down right depressing to see a noob pass your hard work in a couple of days as they ran their insane battle bot macro... and makes one think what is the point that I can finally see something awesome only to have kills stolen and to be killed by a word processor because you've entered their personal kill area where they farming for adeana and kills... PKs I can handle, being killed by a Bot is just stupid... Though I don't mind the limit of classes Fighter or Mage... the lack of options for personal features and modification of ones character it extremely limited... everybody generally looks the same... same faces... same hair styles... same hair colors... same stats... The quest are pretty standard... find this... kill that... bring me back its head so to say. Leveling is real slow... even worse when your a mage... between sitting and recovering mana... their are no mana potions... and trying to play solo... it's time consuming... by the time I reached lvl 10 I was reading a book waiting for my mana to recover... where as Hit Points recovered quickly, but a mage is useless in physical combat and only gets slightly better later in life... mainly because one has more HP than the mob.... Overall the game is simple to learn... the lack of variety cuts down on some lag issues, but its depressing if you actually play the game to see your characters outclassed in days by well trained bots... and it comes down to Hack (literally Hacked) and Slash. Not worth the money for the game or their monthly charge. Too bad really... seemes to have potential, but not worth it if they can't protect against the INVASION OF THE BOTS.... :-(

Visually stunning world of chaos

Rarely have I played a game that has caused me to stop what I am doing and stare at the computer-generated scenery. Lineage 2 has done that several times already. The graphics, built on a highly modified Unreal engine, are excellent, and allow for a variety of terrains and smoothly animated characters and creatures. My only complaint with regard to the graphics would be that some of the textures don't overlap smoothly and there are obvious seams in the world at some, rare, points. I suppose this is inevitable.

Gameplay is a breeze and it's easy to get to a point where you have several choices in how you develop. Some have criticized the game for a lack of specialized classes, but I think starting out players as generalists in either combat or magic is a good idea. That way you have a clear picture of what you want to do when you finally decide to become a Wizard, a Knight, a Shillen Oracle, a Spellhowler, whatever. It's better for RP, too, even though there isn't much of that going on in L2.

L2 is not a safe world, in that you may be cut down by other players at any time. The karma system is a good innovation although personally I'd like to see the 'red' penalty for killing last a bit longer. It allows players to defend themselves, although more often than not this only allows the attacker to avoid turning red. I personally like the element of chaos and danger because it's realistic for a fantasy world and encourages partying, which is always more fun.

The level treadmill isn't overly simple, which is good, and when the game is complete the clan system should add lasting value. The music is good, the sound is good, and my only problem with the control scheme is that it is sometimes hard to pinpoint enemies in mass melees or indoors, where the camera sometimes get wonky.

L2 is a very promising game to which I'll be subscribing, for a couple of months at least. Give it a shot, at least until Vanguard comes out.

Awesome

I've been playing for about 3 months now. All I can say is that I love this game that's fueled by HATE. Leveling is pretty standard... gets pretty fun higher levels. PK'ing is always a blast... if you're not into killing other players, then this isn't for you sissies. Play style is pretty straight-forward... point-n-click. Hope to see you on and dead.

This game is a blast

I had a ton of fun with this game during open beta and can't wait to get back to playing it. Not your typical fantasy RPG - it's got wide open, player on player combat where anything goes. There's a karma system to penalize PKers, but so what? I love prowling the hillsides looking for newbies, and facing mercenaries looking for me afterward. Way too much fun!

THIS IS A DISGRACE

I have read all the reviews on this forum and after actually playing for awhile myself, I can say a few things as below;

1. It was a mistake to allow other non english speaking players in the american server.

2. It was a mistake to run an online game with the total lack of english support.

3. Game is engineered overall to waste as much time as possible. This is what makes me shudder above all, when a game all it does is it requires you to repeat the process of leveling(?) constantly just to get anywhere is when the game seriously affects one's quality of life. IN short, this game seized to be a short, couple of hour entertainment at your desk, this is designed to ruin one's life by making you play ungodly hours, because otherwise you don't get anywhere in the game itself.

4. I have played the game and besides leveling and gaining equipments there are no other strenghts. Seige never happens, the quests are generic, no story lines. Back in the days of MUD games we had much more engrossing experience even without all this bright graphics(which are generic as is). If character creation is all this game has going for, it is a lost cause. One should realize good graphics does not make a good game.

5. Roleplaying genre overall has been used to death. I know they are trying to fine-tune their run-away hit but with Japan, RUssia and US all geared towards the online game market, unless
they come up with something more original then a diablo clone, they will soon lose to the more well financed behemoths of the game industry.

6. Any part time employees of NCsoft should take this as a advice from a very concerned critic. I want to see the korean online game industry to succeed here in the states. As such, I have been objective as possible, but as far as I can see if you keep up this kind of quality and service you will lose customers for sure. As the first korean game maker to make ratings here should know that if NCsoft fails then this casts very dark cloud over any future prospects here in the states for any other korean game company.

7. Last, but not the least, what I was trying to say previous, part time employees of NCsoft whom are lurking the customer review sections of the amazon.com and all the other review sections. DO NOT try to change the ratings and change people's opinion over what are the obvious problems over the game by just blatantly ignoring all who criticized the game as the one "who just didn't play long enough", "they just don't understand this is the greatest game ever" or "they don't know what they are talking about" Because, it only shows your own ignorance over the game's problems(would you admit it after everybody stops using it?) and frankly, it's just plain rude to talk that way to your customers.

Im an MMORPG'r since the 2nd month EQ came out in 98. Ive spent time playing EQ, AC1 and AC2, DAoC, Eve and AO. Now I have played L2 for the one month that came with the purchase of this game, i reached lvl 23 in this time. Graphics are excellent, I was excited to play when i saw the quality. But graphics only go so far if the gameplay isnt there.

pros: great graphics, and spell effects. Characters are rendered well. No need for binding because you are resurrected in the nearest town (i found this to be a nice feature) thats about it.

cons: everyone looks the same. equipment is everything, so if your rich or have a rich friend your golden, if not be ready for a lvl 5 to kick your lvl 15 butt. When you die you can loose levels, and player killers (PK'rs) can help you in reducing your level in this way (really lame). Oh and you can loose those 'o so important peices of equipment when you die. There seems to be absolutly no concern on the part of NCsoft for botting and camping areas for ungodly amounts of time (im talking days). Killing the same mobs over and over and over and over and .... well you get the point (I guess i can see why there are so many botters with this kind of gameplay, its the only way you can tolerate the leveling process) PvP really lends itself to griefers also.

If you really have your heart set on playing lineage2 make sure to find a sugar daddy/momma or your in for a boring ride until you can pay your own way.

Missing the mark....
