This is awesome. Period. I played Lineage 1, which Im sure none of you have heard of, and I was addicted for over three years. And I now have the North American Lineage 2, beta. And it rocks.
Totally Awesome. Im gonna go play it after I write this review..literally. The graphics use the 3D unreal engine. It has the best sounds ever. Its not extremely gory, for all the people who think those games are evil, because I know quite a few. Its just.asdasd..im gonna go play..id ont wanna finish..bye

i didn't want to love it

i have played Lineage for over two years, have come to revel in the community aspects of the game, and can vouch for its highly addictive nature.

i was gifted with access to Lineage2 closed beta (i didn't ask for it ;)), and set it aside, not really believing that this "new" version of my game could tempt me away from my deep immersion in lin1. beside, lin2 did not support the Mac platform and i did not want to buy a PC just to play a new game.

but i followed the news about lin2 regardless, and was intrigued more and more over time. finally i did have a PC built and logged in for open beta. i haven't played lin1 since. o.O

Lineage2 is spectacularly beautiful. it promotes community even more than lin1. i am finding that the benefits of belonging to a clan far outweigh going solo. solo hunting can be achieved in some areas, but other achievements can only be accomplished by working with a trusted group.

i was afraid that the 3D interface would make me motion sick. it doesn't, it was surprisingly easy to become accustomed to.

i was afraid that pk (player killing) would be rampant. it isn't. the karma system and harsh penalty for killing a player who does not fight back seems to have reduced the number of grief players while still allowing mutual pvp without penalty. if you fight back, you are accepting the challenge, and whoever wins the fight will receive no penalty. in fact the winner will receive kudos for their kill by gaining a point on his pvp wins score. if you dont want to engage in the fight, simply keep moving and don't hit back, more often than not your attacker will also move on, not wanting the penalty for continuing an unwelcomed aggression.

lin1 still holds a place in my heart as my first MMORPG, but lin2 will be my new home. i love that i can now see my character's face, and that she doesn't look like everyone else. each character class has several looks to choose from, first being a fighter body or mage body, male or female, then multiple hair styles, and two slightly different faces and two hair colors. further customization comes in the way of clothing and weapons. your character will look unique, and the more you play, the more clothes and weapons you will get to try.

some players complain about the leveling treadmill. which means that to advance in the game requires repetitively killing monsters. this has never bothered me ... i base my game on the company i keep. lin2 promotes interaction with fellow gamers. it gives a rich, beautiful and enormous playground to us to play in. and with the company of good friends (which you are sure to make in a community-based game), every day is something new.

to sum it up, even though i was very skeptical, i'm hooked.

-----------------------------

follow-up:

unfortunately the longer i remained in the world of lineage2, the more disenchanted i became. i did have great times for a very long time, but in the end, the hostility and seediness fostered in the game environment overshadowed the good times had with friends ... the majority of our group have moved on to a new game.

to the lineage 2 game developers:
i feel that the game could be greatly improved by adopting just a few minimal elements that proved successful in lineage 1. give the players a safe "no item drop" level to work toward. lineage 1 players know this concept as "full law." put in place better means of listening to player complaint, and of detecting exploits/hacks/cheats and enforcing the rules of agreement. and evaluate and correct the damage professional "farmers" are causing to gameplay and game economy.

Soooo disappointed!

I've been playing MMORPGs since Ultima Online was first released.

As a huge fan of Lineage 1, I had very high hopes for this game and I'm sad to report that the magic is just not there... this game is BORING.

In Lineage 1, there were just more things to do. For example anyone could tame and level dogs and make a decent living selling them. Elves and fighters could make equipment. If you didn't feel like leveling or making things, you could go bet on the slime races. There were fun items in the game like spell wands that anyone could use. I remember finding one that turned other players into random animals or mobs. I kept it on me a long time and used it to turn people who stole from me into chicken or cows--even my victims found it hilarious.

I remember learning about a "secret" passageway between the dungeon on Talking Island and the dungeon on the mainland. What a fun adventure it was trying to get through that as a newbie...

Where was all this in Lineage 2? Nowhere to be found.

Just leveling, leveling, leveling--and constant arguments.

Farmers are players who kill the same stuff over and over to sell adena online to other players. Sometimes there are so many farmers in one area that actual players cannot play at all. Very frustrating and very ugly. The arguing and fighting is non stop.

Overall a bad atmosphere and a boring game. I hope they can turn it around.

Don't waste your money

I just canceled my NCSoft accounts for both City of Heros and Lineage II.

Lineage II is nothing more then a treadmill. You like to grind? You'll love this game. You want content, variety, social interaction (PKing not included) and/or enjoyment? STAY AWAY FROM THIS GAME!!

First 20 levels can be done in about 30 hours game play max, I would say. While doing this have something on TV you want to watch because you are gonna be bored. After that you get to chose your profession. then do it all again for 20 more levels. Excitement comes from PKers and Bots. You have to take care of these yourself cause the GMs have no clue at all.
The Pkers have actually been known to use bots to hit you then you swing back and turn pink, then they kill you with no reprocusions to their karma. They can come into town and laugh at you after they killed you cause you were pink when they killed you. Or they set up in PK packs, like wolves, and hunt lowbies.
The Bots are about 1 in every 4 characters you will see in the average server. Tweaked out and on autopilot they kill everything in range, even you if you get to close. Forget hunting in that area as it will be dead before you reach it.
All in all NCSoft needs to stick to the other side of the planet if they dont want to do ALOT more development and ... here's a thought ... GIVE CUSTOMER SUPPORT TO THE PEOPLE GIVING YOU MONEY!

Seriously folks if you are thinking of getting this game DONT!

As for City of Heros, it atleast encouraged grouping.(...)

Oh yea, one last thing. This game that is now available on the shelf and from online stores such as Amazon is not complete. If you were to compare the current status of this game to the usual standards other games follow thru development, this game is in OPEN BETA. What does that mean to you? That means you are buying an unfinished product. They are selling you something that you will have to help them fix. This is a practice that other MMOs do on a free setup so we get a finnished product for our money. Kinda like buying a converable car, only its not supposed to be a convertable car. They just havent got the roof on yet.

I played Lineage2 in beta man it was awsome. I didnt go for the big server instead i chose a little one. I didnt have many pk problems and all i did have i delt with, with my bow. Pvp is fun and lvling is also fun. I had a clan and that was cool. Definatly get this game. My favorite thing has gotta be the hate of other races. Being an elf it was cool to see Dark Elf raiding parties and attack them. ELVES RULE!!! :P

Service leaves something to be really desired...

The game, content or graphics and players are great! It's the support you get from NCSoft... very poor!

You can't login... servers are crashing since the patches. No communication from NCSoft about the issues.

I won't play or buy another NCSoft game.

I love it so far

I've been playing the closed beta now for 3 weeks. If you like Everquest, I think you will like this game too. The graphics blow everything else out of the water. The female characters are very scantily clad ... !!! ... but that does just add to the fun. I happen to like the pvp aspect of the game. I wasn't a PKer but it did make the game more intense. You had to be stealthy when you were hunting and watch out for raiding PK hunting parties. I literally only saw a few minor bugs in the beta but it is lacking in some niceties that most mmorpgs have such as being able to easily find your friends (no /who command) and no autorun. There is a nice economic system which was easy to use, banking, and players can autosell while afk as in Final Fantasy XI. The classes look fantastic. Even the orcs look good. I do wish there was more variety in facial features and hair color. Maybe this will be added after beta. Give it a try if you like this genre. Its a fun game.

I hope people don't waste thier money on this game. I played 1 month of beta and 2 months of live and I have to tell you the graphics is the only thing going for it.

here's some of the big problems:

LAG = get used to it there is tons of it every time you go to a town with more then 10 people.

Grinding = get used to it theres tons of it with little reward. In higher levels you get less and less xp and about the same ammount of cash from a high level mob as you would from a low.

Bots = did you know in this game 1 out of every 2 people is a bot? Do the devs do anything about it when you report the botter... yeah they laugh at you. Thats about it.

Characters = well... not sure how much is a lot but for each class there is a male and a female model and then each of those have 2 faces and 2-4 hairstyles and 2 hair colors... hmmmm... a lot of options lol the best character creators to date that I've seen is in Eve Online and Starwars Galaxies both allow for like millions of possabillities instead of the limited pallet in L2.

Classes = yeah there is like 2 choices you can take at level 20 for each of the base classes... problem is you divide that number by 2 cause each opposing race has a class simillar to it.

Cash = hard to get unless you buy it.
Equipment = Gotta have cash to get it... well you could round up the components to get one made but... your better off getting the cash.
Crafting = only dwarfs can do it and dwarfs are lowsy fighters. And as said before getting components for anything is hard to do.
Bugs = Galore
PvP = totally messed up... players get punished and griefers get rewarded.
PvE = boring/repetitive

Anyone who gives a good rating to this game without playing it and just looking at the pictures on the website are just foolish. Buy the game, waste your money then write the review... not vise versa.

I gave the fun a 3 because it was fun at first... well except getting ganked repeatedly by a lvl 24 pker while I was a lvl 3(then lvl 2) in the newb area. But after a while its the same old same old.

Overall the game scored a big old 1 star because its just that bad... I'm currently playing star wars galaxies which is a much better game.

Recomend you try: EVE online, Starwars Galaxies, EQ, WoW (pretty good did some beta testing), Ultima Online

When I started this game I was very optimistic. The controls took time to get used to, but after 10+ hours I grew to like the ease of casting spells. You start this game off on a little place called Talking Island. A good starting point for all levels under 10, with small quests and minimal challenge. The problem with it is that in Lineage II, you have the option to kill other players. Many high levels hang out at Talking Island just to kill all the low levels. Which normally wouldn't be a problem, but when you die in Lineage II, you lose a considerable amount of experience. So you're leveling for 1 hour to gain 1/2 a level and a guy comes along and kills you for no reason, and you lose 7% of yer experience and an item you were carrying. WTF! I wasted at least 20 hours of re-leveling just because of the mass amount of player killers. Then after you finally get experienced enough to defend yourself, it's becomes a grind to level past 20 and the game gets quite boring. Not to mention all the adena(money) exploits this game offers. Seems the only way to buy good weapons/equipment in this game is through various shady websites. You definately wont find adena leveling as you'll need to spend that money just getting by with spells and travel. If you want to waste your life and not get any rewards, go ahead and buy this game. But if you want the element of fun in a game, I would suggest another title.

Serial number already in use

I bought this game with high hopes, regardless of the numerous poor reviews. However upon getting my SEALED box and installing the game, NCSoft says my serial number had already been used. There was no recourse here as I did not have my store receipt, a fax machine, photo copier, and so on. Basically they dont care and wont do anything to help me (after several days of email only support). There seems to have been problems with this and other NCSoft games related to serial numbers already being in use (did web search after I got burned).
