It's not too bad, but rent before you buy.

First off, I suggest you play the first game because it is more compelling and freakishly creepy than this one. The best thing that this game has going for it, much like the first one, is the atmosphere and the settings. In my opinion this is why the Silent Hill series is better than the Resident Evil games. Silent Hill manages to freak you out merely by the surrounding you are in and the images you see, as opposed to RE's having things jump out at you and make loud noises to scare you. The voice acting is so-so, but manages to not be cheesy like in RE games. The graphics are absolutely gorgeous, especially if you change the noise effect setting in the "special options" menu, which is accessable after you beat the game the first time. The story is a little hard to follow but far better than the ones in the mostly story-less RE games, which is the other strong point of the game. The biggest drawback, and the reason I say rent it first, is that there basically isn't that much to do in the game, and it doesn't have the replay value that RE does (you can't blow up monsters with bazookas or annihilate them with gatling guns, plus there aren't that many monsters in the game).

Could have been better

After seeing the XBOX preview movie for Silent Hill 2, it's apparent how lacking the PS2 version is in the graphics department. If you are picking up an XBOX, you'd be much smarter to wait for the XBOX version. Otherwise, a worthwhile PS2 game.

Long Silent Walk

I picked up this game, hoping to engage in a compelling and spooky challenge, but I have to say, it bored me senseless. I spent the first two hours simply walking and walking and running and walking through annoying fog. The controls are wonky and often my James would spend a lot of his walking time going in the wrong direction or turning in circles. After two hours of play the only things that happened were finding a map, looking down a well, and meeting a girl in a cemetary, oh, and burning a hell of a lot of virtual calories. I did kill one monster, but only after travelling miles down a path and then having to retrace my steps. I have no desire to turn this game on again and find out anything more. Absolute borefest.

Will it deliver...?

Just happened to read the "review" from somebody that supposedly has played Silent Hill 2. Pretty odd considering the game was just released here in Japan. Maybe this person was mistaken, and he thought the first game was the latest... I wonder... Anyway, Silent Hill 2 is a big buzzword here in Tokyo, with many people lining up to hopefully get a good fright from this promising game. The previews and demonstration gameplay sure shows some of the weirder elements of the game (some of it is pretty grotesque), but hopefully it lives up to the hype and provides some challenging puzzles as well as the straight spooky stuff that is hard to find in a video game these days. From what I have seen and heard so far, it looks like it could very well be a winner. Will it deliver...? I surely hope so.

Apalling voice acting...terrible dialogue...moderately scary

I'll admit it. I wasn't a HUGE fan of the original Silent Hill, although I love the Survival Horror Genre-made popular by the Resident Evil games.

There are a few things which have a very hard time seeing past in Silent Hill 2.

I am 2/3rd of the way through, and just getting through the thing already feels like work.

I am not swept into the plot, which is not cohesive and propelled by empty characters. The characters are poorly designed. Their dialogue is laughable. The voice-acting makes Resident Evil 1 seem like the work of James Earl Jones calibre voice actors.

The highly touted 'fog' which permeates the game looks more like smoke than fog to me. The manequin type creatures which are your main nemesis are far less frightening than the mutant-elf-children from SH1.

The 'search' function offers so little information. You dutifully go from door to door, garbage can to garbage can and are not even given a sentence or two of text to let you know that "I cannot open this door", or else, "This garbage smells, but there is nothing inside". Even though the player is never rewarded with information pertaining to his search, he/she has to search every nook, as often some unlikely door will open, or some unlikely garbage can will contain something useful.

The only reason I give this game 3 stars is because there is NOTHING else out there which is any good in this genre...

The puzzles are above average, but not as inventive or gratifying to solve as the puzzles in the first Silent. ....

This game could've and SHOULD'VE been MUCH better.

this game ... big time! i wasted my money on this one. the graphics were ... and it didn't come close to scaring my little sister let alone me. the story line was very weak and i had the game beat in about a week. they went a little crazy with that fog too. what in the world were they thinking?! if you want a great game that will keep your attention i would like to tell you to please, please go for the new resident evil game. now there's a game! i couldn't put that one down. SH2 was so weak i think i forgot i owned it. you know, just threw it in the back of my T.V. stand. SH2 is lucky i am giving it 2 stars, lets just leave it at that.

This game is freakin scary. Its like the monsters are so cheezy that theyre actually terrifying. The fog and darkness impede your view so that your guessing when the next monster is gonna attack you. This game is especially scary because your just an ordinary dude with no superpowers whatsoever-he hardly knows how to use a firearm. The reason this game isnt perfect is because theres only 3 different guns plus 5 close range weapons. But even 8 weapons seems like too much when theres only 6 types of monsters! It's not all bad though, the story is very interesting and motivates a dude to finish the game. The main charachter (james sunderland) seems to be the only ordinary person in the game. Everybody else has some sort of secret theyre hiding. The radio that emits static when enimies are nearby was a genius idea. This game is worth the money, but I think resident evil code veronica x is better. Resident evil is not quite as scary, but it has way more weapons and enimies and is much longer.

Average game, not a game to go out and buy

This game had so many good qualities. But it had a lot of bad qualities too that is the problem. The First Game on the first playstation was a lot better.
