This game has more than lived up to my expectations. The first Silent Hill was enjoyably creepy, but this one is even more so. During some parts of the game, I find myself almost hoping every door I try to open remains stuck, so I don't have to face what might be on the other side. The graphics for the most part are beautiful, the sound effects are all very appropriate and add quite a bit to9 my apprehension for what's coming. Prior to getting the game, I really didn't believe the reviews that said "Don't play this with the lights off". But I have found that to be very true sometimes--I have been very tempted to keep them on. This is much more of a "shivers and tingles" kind of scary then the jump out of your seat RE kind of scary, and I approve!

I finished this game in 9H. 20M., and 6 of those hours where today. I'm sure if you're reading this you'll also read a few of the other reviews here. So, yes, the controls are awkward, but you get used to them. And, yes, the enemies you have to fight aren't much of a challenge to any semi-serious gamer. But, must every game's point be a challenging fight? If so, fine. Avoid the game, as it clearly wasn't meant for such people. The game was meant for people who have waited for gaming development and technology to get so advanced that you can play what begins to feel like a movie that you have power over. Well, Silent Hill 2 gives you that. The horror in this game is the worst kind - psychological. It plays on a person's fears. Sure, the fog is as fantastic as you may have heard. It doesn't prepare you for the creepiness you get mid-game, when a big change happens, and things get even harder to see... When this moment came, and I started to hear noises, I literally swung my character around 360 degrees again and again, weapon at ready, not knowing what the hell to do with myself. You'll hear noises, voices, and at the freakiest moments. You'll think you have everything under some control, and the game keeps ripping that control away. You'll walk into a room, and by the time you walk out nothing is the same. And it freaks you out. By the 6th hour of playing, you'll seriously want to somehow turn the gun he is holding on your character just so They can't have the satisfaction of driving him insane anymore and so he can escape this Hell. The cut scenes barely feel as if they're cutting. The graphics are that well done. The voice acting is very effective, the dialogue very believable, and at times emotionally moving. The story itself is what made me play 6 hours straight. I needed to know what the hell is going on with this poor guy and the people surrounding him. And part of me was afraid to find out. But, I wanted to help him. I felt like I could... maybe I did. Yes, it feels this real. When I close my eyes tonight, his story will be playing in them. Grand Theft Auto 3 is mindless fun. Silent Hill 2 has fun with your mind. Let it.

Just finished the game last night.WOW.I couldn't stop playing. It really creeped me out like none of the Resident Evil games has ever been able to do.Konami did an amazing job with this game. The gritty graphics are perfect and work in a way that smooth shiny ones just wouldn't have. The sound A+,it just builds and really adds to the feeling you get that something just isn't right. The control is pretty easy,so you can keep your mind on the story. The story is great also.I'm telling you it really unnerved me,and even when I wasn't playing,I thought about it.Do yourself a favor play with the sound up and with the lights out.Trust me it adds to the uncomfortable feeling crawling up your spine.

A great game, wish more were made like this!

After playing the game on hard mode, what can I say! It was damn hard. Well worth buying, but I understand that it's too pricey, then rent it out!

The puzzles are painfully hard pending on which difficulty level you choose to play on! The game is eerie and scary and is worth playing purely for the level of skill of solving puzzles. If you think your a smart person and a avid PS gamer from Tomb Raider to Resident Evil classics, this game sure is along those lines!

Excellent game. The graphics and sound are impressive, and although the gameplay is ponderous at times (the 3D controls are goofy), it's one of the best PS2 titles out there. Storyline is great, but there is an air of mystery that remains about Silent Hill, even if you beat the game. With any luck, we'll get a SH3 in the future that will let us in on more.

Scary, Gory, and Haunting, but Not Action-Packed

When it comes to story and atmosphere, it's hard to beat Silent Hill 2. The plot is fascinating and bizarre (and more than earns the 'Mature' rating), and the game's two central gimmicks--the pervading darkness that conceals most of your surroundings and the radio that blares static whenever enemies are near--generate truly nail-biting suspense. However, players hoping for the fast-paced, gut-splattering, grenade-chucking action of games like Resident Evil will definitely find themselves disappointed and frustrated, as most of your gameplay time will be taken up by puzzle-solving and exploration. It's also worth noting that although the game is very short (I finished it in 7 hrs on my first try), the game has multiple endings, and just understanding the story requires playing it at least twice.

Disturbing from start to finish...

When I first heard about Konomi dishing out a sequel to Silent Hill, I was excited yet dubious at the same time. I thought there was no way any sequel could surpass the scariness that the first game offered. Was I ever wrong. This game will leave you on the edge of your seat from start to finish with a superb storyline, creepy realistic enviornments shrouded in mist and darkness, as well as numerous interactions with disturbing characters. Enemy-wise, you'll be facing off against, slimy patient demons, twisted bloody nurses, freaky maniquins; and the MOTHER OF ALL MONSTERS: the dark, malevolant Pyramid Head!!! This game is guaranteed to give you nightmares and a need to sleep with the lights on. Survival Horror fans, what are you waiting for? This game is a must have!!!

Film-noir and horror for your PS2.

This is the first in the series I have played. I am impressed and will play the others. I will not rehash the plot here since it is widely known. I will say, however, there are twists throughout this venture.
This is not an action game. Vice City fans may be disapointed by the games slow pace (at times). Film buffs and horror film aficionados will most likely enjoy this well plotted, creepy and atmospheric game. David Lynch fans should take note that there is references to Blue Velvet and Lost Highway throughout this disc. There is one scene in particular that is clearly inpired by the voyeur scene in Blue Velvet. Silent Hill's rendition actually makes the scene creepier then the film!

Playability is fun however difficult at times. If it weren't for the Internet (and Gamewinners.com in particular) I would have been lost. You may need help getting through this.
There are several alternate endings that makes replayability an atractive option. I only played once. It took me three weeks to finish the game. Well seasoned gamers could probaly beat this in a fraction of the time.

Highly recomended!

Silent Hill 2: The Brand New Nightmare

Konami did it again and released Silent Hill 2. The story is much different with brand new characters and brand new storyline thus making it a brand new game (and not a sequel like Capcom usually does).

What to expect? Expect severe horror, mystery and gore that game has to offer. No Pokemon playing person should expect anything cute in this game because "Silent Hill 2" would just be too weird for them. If ever you would like to compare this game with any of the Resident Evil series I'm sorry to inform you the genre of this game is more demanding... of fortitude.

How about suggestions? Well, there isn't much to suggest for the game (including the puzzles) because its almost like the first game, only more challenging and more eerie. Oh, there is one thing I could suggest which I believe should be common to all that would play: "Don't play at night!"

Play it with the lights off!

I am writing my review based on having played the original Silent Hill before. This game plays pretty much like the first one, with majorly beefed up graphics. After viewing the intro where your character is looking in to the mirror and then given control to you, I couldn't believe these were the in game graphics. I'm glad they kept in the character's having to use a flashlight because it's pitch black with out it. You never know what you'll be shining that light on, and sometimes you don't want to know. Unlike Resident Evil where the rooms are pretty much all lit up for you. This game was not as scary as the first one, because I kind of new what types of things to expect, such as the hospital zombies and the nightmare world change. The first one was chilling with its little subtelties such as being in a room checking doors and finding nothing only to hear a faint cry in the empty room you are in as you are trying to leave it, and having a locker rattle around with something inside it, you check it out and later come upon that same rattling locker in the nightmare world. This was creepy stuff. And, unlike other reviewers you don't get the full experience of this awesome horror series when you play with the lights on. I played these games on my own late into the night with the lights off. It's the only way to do it, that's why your playing these games, to get scared! About the puzzles in the game, I thought these were not as tough as ones from Part 1, such as the Piano riddle, and appendage room. My personal new favorite is the hair box. Creepy. So in all, I think this is an excellent buy whether you played Part 1, or if you are just starting the series with this one. I highly recommend this game and part 1 even more so.
