An excellent game. Still leaves many things to be desired.

Before any reader and I get off on the wrong foot, I would like to establish the fact that Silent Hill 2 is a gorgeous game and well worth praise and salutations for its great gameplay, graphics, and scare-the-****-out-of-you- atmosphere. That aside I do have a couple *MINOR* complaints about this game that I cannot possibly let go unmentioned. The first of course being the bland setting layout and design. The best way I can describe the forementioned is that they seem almost like toys... I know this sounds very vague... but stay with me here 8-). The setup of the town leaves MUCH to be desired. I have walked by nearly three dozen different places and have LONGED to be able to explore inside of the buidlings. Even the places you *do* explore lack a sense of variety and pizzaz. It is almost as if the games soul has been robbed;however, the directors of Silent Hill 2 may have had this "soul-less" design in mind when they produced the game... we may never know... Now I will begin my praising of the game, which is why I am SURE the kind ole' folks at amazon.com allow me to write here anyways.............. Silent Hill 2 is a horror junkies holy grail. You will never run out of morbid and otherwise disturbing images to run across. The games excellent graphics and supurb soundtrack only emphasize the shock of stumbling across that headless corpse or the monster with legs for arms... The music and sound effects lend you the feeling of being followed. I have caught myself turning around many a time in the game to check my "back". The game's lack of "soul" lends a terrible air of mystery to the game. Making the gamer long for knowlege that just doesent exist. Even upon completing the game you still never realllly know what is going on. All of the characters are crazy, in some form or fashion. I could rant and rave about the numerous qualities of Silent Hill 2 until dinner time this evening... but I'm not going to do that. To sum my review up... Silent Hill 2 would be the perfect book, a fantasy where your mind would draw the world, not a computer... alas Silent Hill 2 IS a computer, and an excellent one at that.

Silent Hill really good-The first time around

Atmospheric and Eerie, Silent Hill 2 gives you everything that you have come to expect from what could become a very successful series. The areas that you must explore, from the haunted hotel to the harrowing hospital are as spine chilling as anything that you will have seen before, or probably ever will again. The only problem that I have with this game is that the enemies are repetitive and you see the same ones over and over again. Also the replay value is extremely low, unless you want to see one of the four or five different endings. Otherwise getting through the game the second or third time is awfully boring.

One Great Game. It will scare you.

This game is great. It has a superb storyline and monster list. The constant running around can get annoying at times but don't let it get to you because the game is stunning none the less. While confusing at times the storyline has two levels to it, the obvious and the religious. I could make a huge statement about how deep this game and the others in the series can be but there are other places to get a plot synopsis. Unfortuanetly, this game does not really tye into the first and third games in the ways of storyline but don't worry you will not be disappointed. These make it a great game on multiple levels and keep you playing to learn more about the littler things not easily noticed your first time through. All in all a great game and a must have. Goodbye and happy gaming.

probably the downright creepest game I've played

Silent Hill 2 starts off kind of slow but picks up rapidly as you get sucked further and further into the dark effects of the game. The sound effects alone are enough to make your heart stop. I've never experienced such tension while playing a game or watching a movie. I've played all of the Resident Evil games and they are really good, but there's something creepier about Silent Hill that makes it that much better. Maybe because it's not as technical as the Resident Evil games, it's not based out of some scientific background, government cover up trying to make the ultimate killing machine. It's just a guy trying to find his wife in a severely messed up town.

I beat this game about a year ago, and was very impressed with it's all around value. Some of the concepts and scenarios you have to endure are quite intense. One in particular being a gigantic, pitch black room with the gallows located in the very middle. It's totally silent and you go to run to the middle of the room and you hear something run by you. The sound in this game is amazing. It continues to come back and run by you but you can't see anything so you run for you life and try to get the puzzle solved so you don't have to be in there anymore.

Sure some of the puzzles are kind of simplistic and sometimes it gets confusing but this game is well worth some play time. Definitely creepy, quiet, and intense. Although the ending lacks much to be desired, and was very disappointing, and the game only took about ten hours for me to beat I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys the horror genre. It is a creative and dark inductee to a gaming world full of same ol' same ol's.

"AAHHHHHHHH!!"

I used to think the Resident Evil games were scary! That is, until I played this nasty little gem for PS2. Holy crap! I literally had nightmares about this stuff. Very Lovecraftian. The dank atmosphere is brilliant, and the foggy unseen images are brutal. Definitely NOT for the squeemish.

In my opinion, the best of the 3 Silent Hill games.

In my restless dreams, I see that game, Silent Hill 2....

I don't write Amazon reviews, but after reading several negative reviews, I just had to praise this excellent game, and explain WHY it can be considered poor by so many.

For starters, it is slow going at first and to some extent throughout the entire game, especially if you are expecting a fast paced action title or shooter. Fighting is not something to be enjoyed but it is merely something that you have to do in the world of SH. The controls are clunky and the combat system is sub-par in order to drive home the fact that you are a regular guy with no combat training what-so-ever. If you were trapped in a town being chased by bizarre creatures, you prob. wouldn't move gracefully either. You also spend your time backtracking and wandering aimlessly for items to fit into puzzles.

If the game sounds bad already, then it is not the game for you. Many people simply aren't suited to like this type of game.

The reason it IS a good game for the rest of us is because it creates an atmosphere of extreme isolation coupled with the use of dark, grainy backgrounds and disturbing, very twisted imagery. Also, the game brings up the question of what exactly is happening to you (i.e. are you dead, is this hell, are you crazy, are you dreaming?). All of this is for the sole purpose of drawing you in and immersing you into the games world in order to scare you, which it accomplishes quite well. Spooky background noises and anti-climaxes abound to create a feeling of tension as well as just generally bizarre aspects to further distance you from reality. And, the story is quite deep and unnervingly dark, although it's hard to figure out just quite what everything means (read: lots of symbolism.)

Play this one in the dark alone and you will not sleep that night...I most certainly didn't. :)

My recommendation:

If you like adrenaline pumped action games: stay far, far away from this one, and any other survival horror.

If you want to be immersed into a twisted, psychological playground, get this one as quickly as you can or better yet, start with the first one for the PlayStation, which only has the issue of outdated graphics to contend with, but is still the scarier game.

Good luck, and enjoy your mind-numbingly terrifying experience!

Silent Hill is 100% scary!

This game is very scary. I had to stop playing before it even turned ten. I've heard a lot of bad things about the handling but what do those people know, the handling is great. I would preffer this game for a hard-core gamer because it is difficult and challenging.

One of the best...

This game holds a spot very near and dear to my heart as being my favorite surrivival horror game (and I've played a lot of them), so instead of getting all mushy on you all, I'll mearly give you some of the basics. Let me stat by saying that many people believe this game represents one of the finest examples of story telling to have ever graced a video game and I will spoil none of it in my review. The game, in short, combines the creepiness and mood from the first game, with the controlls and graphics of the 3rd. From it's opening scenes, the game draws you in and however horrific and disturbing things get on screen (and at times, they will get very disturbing), the game mearly becomes more addictive. As things go on, you find your self intrigued, not only with the story of the protagonist, but with the history of the setting of the story, the town of Silent Hill (i'm not giving anything away here... the name of the game is silent hill 2, and if you can't make some sort of assumption that the game takes place in Silent Hill, you need not bother with this game at all). like many other survival horrors, this game has fixed camera angles (sort of... you can push a button to put the camera behind your player, but this only works in some areas) that can become a little bothersome at first, but in the end help add to the suspence. It also has corny diolauge, but this can be easilly forgiven, as it does not take away from the mood that the game creates. Next up, this game is not for every one and is not a gore filled splatter-fest, but does feature some blood and several disturbing images that will stay with you for some time to come. I recomend the game to mature players... not only because of it's content, but because of it's story. The game does not spell out any thing for you, and there is a lot of symbolisim (i.e. many things you see hapen arround you, reflect things that have happened in you characters past, or in his mind.... and you have to make this assumption all on your own in many cases, wondering what something symbolises) and the story touches on many "mature" issues, such as child abuse, wedding vows, euthanasia, suicide, hommicide, and religion. After all the praise I have given the game, you may be wondering why I rated the orrigional SH2 with only 3 stars. This is because the orrigional game is not nearly as good as the "Greatest Hits' version for ps2 or the "restless dreams" version for x-box (both versions are exactly the same). These versions contain many things that were not included in the orrigional game, such as more endings, more items, more options, and a different playable character, and her own short story/prolouge that you can play through (lasts about 30 min.s to 2 hours, depending on your skill :-) ) Because of this, the "greatest hits" and "restless dreams" versions are 5 star games while the orrigional is only 3 when compared to them. Be sure that if you are buying the game for ps2, make sure the box art has a red top, with "greatest hits" writen in the red. If you own an x-box, the restless dreams version is the only one availabe for the x-box so don't worry. In conclusion, This is one of the best survival horror games ever released, and scares you in a subtle, creepy way that very few games can. Including an award-winning story, easy to learn controlls, good graphics (The graphics are saposed to look grainy.... after you beat the game once, you can make them smooth and turn off the grainy filter) and a healthy amout of replay value, this is one game that belongs in any survival horror fan's collection. .

Greatest game I have ever played

This is my favorite game I have ever played on any system, and I own Silent Hill 1, too. They are both good games, but beyond the music, the graphics, and the many endings, this games has the most extensive, beautiful, fascinating, and--of course--the scariest damn story I have ever seen in a game. This is better than most movies I have seen! You MUST try this game. Buy it cn computer, even. It is definitely worth the time. The ending is amazing.

Scary as hell

Do not listen to Joesph, because this game is definitely one of the best PS2 games out there. It's so scary i actually had nightmares from it, and that's the ONLY game that's done that kind of thing so far. the first one was spooky enough, but this game brings it to another level completely, I can't wait for the third game. if you get the greatest hits version of the game, you get extras you would not find in the original version, so if you have the original i suggest trading it in for the Greatest Hits verison, that's what i did. You will probably need a walkthrough for this game, as the puzzles are more ruthless than before. the demons included patient demons, nurse demons, roach demons, manniquien (sp?) demons, Pyramid Head, etc. Pyramid Head is pretty damn disturbing, he tries to hunt James Sunderland down, and i wont tell you why, you need to read up on this game. It has a ton of philosophy, and makes me believe there is a much deeper meaning to that game overall. I think the Resident Evil series are better than Silent Hill series, but in my only right opinion, Silent Hill series is up there along with other great games such as MGS, MGS2, GTA, etc. I recommend buying this game, you will be an idiot like joe if you don't.
