Great Scary Game

I played this game at my friends house when I was spending the week with her, and it is one of the best games I've ever played. I made a mistake in starting to play it late at night. It scared the heck out of me. I started pausing the game and looking around everytime I heard a noise. At one point in the game I even screamed.

The sound effects are probably the key to the game. They really set the mood and atmosphere of the game.

If you're looking for a atmospheric game, then go for it. I had a great time playing it. I couldn't put the controller down. It turned me into a SH addict.

A mental Thrill Ride

James Sunderland is a man with nothing to lose and everything to gain. Walking through life in a near death like state he hangs on working as a small store manager. Three years ago his wife died due to an illness which might be cancer. Suddenly and without warning he receives a letter from the grave. His wife has written to come to the their special place... Silent Hill. The horror begins and better then the orginal Silent Hill which was a candy coated rip off. By adding more mental jumps this game became better at delivering a story as well as realstic characters and the mental illness they suffer with. My theories are that Silent Hill is a way station for lost souls seeking their way home. If anything this is one of the best games ever made.

Superior to Silent Hill 1 and 3. Best of the series.

Silent Hill 2 is a HUGE game - one of biggest on the PS2 with the longest playing time. It took me a few days to complete this game. Silent Hill 1 and 3 can be completed in less than a day. Silent Hill 1 is a PS1 game so the graphics and sound are a little lame by todays standards. Silent Hill 3 has the best graphics and sound but is nowhere near as close to Silent Hill 2 in terms of plot and length. If you are going to play one of the Silent Hill games then this is one to get. It comes on 2 DVDs!

The game is psychologically driven and is part of the survival horror genre. It certainly does last with you a long time after you have finished playing it. The atmosphere is disturbing and the locations are amazing. Imagine walking around a deserted haunted town looking for your dead wife who may have returned from the dead. The game is sooo errrie and nerve-wrecking that it will have you sleeping with one eye open when you go to bed. It can be depressing at times and is a thoroughly soul-wrenching experience, but that is still entertainment! The game is also less guided than Silent Hill 1 and 3 and you can find yourself going in the wrong direction at times, but that is all part of the game play to make the experience more realistic. The monsters are ace, especially the thing with the cone on its head.

This is a fantastic story driven game with very limited downsides (not enough weapons and lots of running back and forth across the map to get items) but it is still a must have! If you are looking for value for the money then Silent Hill 2 delivers in length. It is like playing a horror movie. Two thumbs up!

One of the best survival horror games, period.

In Silent Hill 2, you play as James Sunderland, on his quest through Silent Hill, after he receives a cryptic letter from his wife. Only problem with receiving a letter from his wife is that she has been dead for 3 years. He begins his journey through the town in saftey, when he comes across a strange shadow, he decides to investigate the shadow, and he soon finds that the whole town has been taken over by horrifying, vile monsters. He soon finds clues as to where his wife could be, and along the way, he meets an eclectic group of people, Angela, Maria, Eddie, and Laura, all who seem to know more about his dead wife than they say. During the game, you solve puzzles to find out the truth about the death of Mary and to discover the secret pasts of your new "friends."
Silent Hill 2 utilizes S-Force, a new technology that can emulate a full 5.1 system on a standard tv. And amazingly, it does what it says it does. Imagine, if you will, experiencing the sound of a movie theater while playing a game. That's what you get with Silent Hill 2.
Besides the S-Force, Silent Hill 2 also features amazing SFX. Doors creak, water splashes, monsters make eerie noises, all coming together to scare the crap outta ya. The music also does a great job of setting the mood for a survival horror game that is actually scary. And that's mostly due to the wonderful sound.
One of the coolest sound-related features in Silent Hill 2 is the static radio. Early in the game, you receive a radio, which emits static when you get close to monsters. Partially due to S-Force, partially due to great design, this works incredibly. The game takes place in buildings mostly, which have a whole lotta turns and it gets tricky to see around them. Using the radio, you can plan how you are going to fight/avoid a monster.
The graphics really set the mood also. The coolest display of the games graphics is when you go into the hospital. The floor was grimy, the walls were slimy, and the overall strangeness of the game is created in a beautifully disgusting atmosphere. The prison was equally incredible.
The only point of the graphics, is the real-time, in which you can see numerous jaggies. This isn't all that bad, but towards the end of the game, you can really notice it. I don't know if the developers got tired of working so they slacked off, or there is just more of it towards the end so I noticed it more, but it was quite a distraction. Then again, this is PS2.
A lot of you may complain about all the fog, but personally I loved it. It added to the suspense incredibly. In the first game, it was in place to add to suspense, and because of the limited distance drawing capabilities of the PS1. Now its in Silent Hill 2 just for the creepiness.
Umm...hum...uhh...dag! That was the first words I muttered as I picked up the controller to play Silent Hill 2. Wanting to distinguish itself from Capcom's franchise, Konami decided not to follow the traditional Resident Evil control scheme for it's own. And while it works well, and both companies could learn from each other, the controls still felt funny by the end of the game.
There are other control options available, but I didn't know this until after I was playing the game, and I didn't want to confuse myself even more. If you do play the game, check them out.
It's a very good game indeed. The control could have used some tweaking, but the greatness of the sound and the incredible atmosphere make Silent Hill 2 one of the best games ever.

BEST GAME EVER!!!

Ok, i'm not going to talk about the story, every other review seems to, and i'm not going to spoil anything about the game. Ok, i must say this right now, this game's storyline is amazing, it is really sad and on occasions, almost depressing. It is probably my favorite game ever, but be warned, it is increadibly scary. Scary, not in the "Boo, i jumped out of a grate in the wall and scared the S**t out of you", that kind of fright lasts all of two seconds. No, well your playing this game, right from start to finish, you will have this sense of extreme terror that dosent go away (on occasions, even after you stop playing). But the amazing thing is, the story and the strange, sad, scary scenery and music keep you playing. You want to find out more about the town, what happened to mary, what are these monsters (especially the huge one, but that gives nothing away, because you knew there would be one) and everything else the story presents you with. And it doesnt dissapoint you, everything you wanted to know gets exsplained and your time and effort pays off in an incredible end to an incredible story. Buy this, you wont regret it.

This is the best Action/Adventure game ever!!!
When you select "NEW GAME" you get to choose action and riddle level. The game is really short on Beginner...
It took me 20 hours and 30 minutes...EXACTLY...not a second more or less...On Hard it takes forever to kill an enemy,
I suggest Normal...While you play the game you get clues...
pieces of different stories...At the end you DON'T get a big explanation to everything, but you have to pay attention to everything in the game, and then at the end, paste everything together...There's a million different theories,
but there's 5 different endings so they really mess with your brain... But it's great!!! It is a plus if you have finished Silent Hill 1 first but you don't have to...
If you play all the 3 games and paste together the clues you get a [great] story...By the way...Silent Hill is becoming a movie...

Great Game..... but what happened?!?!?

okay..this game was good. The sound was good, ..All you really do in the game is just travel from apartments to hospitals to a hotel and during the entire time you are at these locations all u do is just travel from room to room in search of some damn keys to get the hell out and for what?! But it's really nothing to worry about, I've just played it three times and just noticed it, it's not a big deal. That's one qualm I have about the game another one is the lack of monsters. I mean of course the game had plenty of monsters....just that they were the same two that you see thoughout the entire game. Like your walking down the street and all u see are 11 monsters that look exactly alike. Not to mention that Konomi should have tried a little harder to create really scary monsters. I mean they were really scary at first and pretty nasty but they just get boring. The scary factor of the game on a 1-10 scale in my opinion is probably a 7 maybe 7.84. The sounds and music were a plus, I have to say Konomi did a good job on that. Whom ever is reading this is probably wondering why I gave the game 5 stars if I had such a big problem with the gameplay and lack of monsters. It's because the game had such a good plot and the characters were awesome... they really get to you. For example Maria something about her seems really shadowey and since she looks just like MARY (main character James'late wife)she is just really creepy. I also THINK I figured out what her perpose as a character in the game was, although I think that I'm probably wrong I won't say what I think Maria is cuz I'm not gonna spoil the game. That's another thing I don't really understand the game. It just left me guessing. Well this game was WORTH the 50 bucks definately and I'm always thinking about things from the game in the back of my mind. I say buy it if you like games that are deep but I suggest you rent it first before ya buy it.

SILENT HIll 2: REVIEW:

By the time I beat the SH2, I quickly ran out an bought the original. After beating it however, I was angry because I got the crappy ending. That being said, Silent Hill 2 seems more likely to give the average gamer a good ending. I honestly never realized how freaky and disturbing any horror game was, until I played SH2. The atmosphere, sounds, and enemy design in this game is outstanding. The graphics are presented very grainy and dark, purposely to make you feel uncomfortable. The effect may seem a bit strange at first, but it's all for the better. Fighting the enemies are not the high point of Silent Hill 2. Some more fluid movement, automatic weapons, and more moves would have been great, however by having the ability to do less, an odd feeling of being vulnerable comes into play.....which only adds terror and uncertainty to the horror experience. For example, ff you are Dante from Devil May Cry, you can take anything on since Dante is so powerful, therefore it is nice to have a human character that is so vulnerable. It really boosts up the realism. Conserving your ammo becomes a very realistic element of necessity.

Honestly, I am an adult who has seen just about every quality horror film ever made. SH2 is the only game to date that scared me. The enemy design and story is so evil, dark, unpredictable, and violent, words can not explain. Everything in this game is like something taken out of your worst nightmare and I sincerely mean that. I mean, it dives into visual, graphic, enemy territory that some of us have really and only experienced in our darkest, most disturbing nightmares. An example walking in a building and coming across a deep, dark hole in the middle of the floor. You realize you can jump down the hole and travel wherever it goes! You make it to the bottom and there is another deeper, darker hole in the floor where you had just landed! You continue down these holes and explore the very surreal, evil places in which it takes you. I find things like that extremely interesting because you never know where you're going or what is going to happen next! There is shock value in this game that is .... well .... shocking.

The story in Silent Hill 2 is the most captivating since Metal Gear Solid 2. I am serious. MGS2 obviously had a much deeper, ambitious, complex story, but SH2 makes you want to find out the truth about what happened to James's wife, who has mysteriously disappeared. The entire game you see these terrible things that leave you with more questions unanswered until the very end. The story is so eerie, depressing, shocking, and interesting that you have to continue to find out what happened to James's wife. Most people will not expect the end. It is totally mind-blowing, but if someone tells you, you won't care because you did not build up to it through all the events. Buy this game if you haven't and beat it.

One thing I didn't like about Silent Hill 2 is that several of the puzzles were way too difficult. I could not pass them without looking at a walkthrough and I HATE USING CHEATS!!! There is one part where you must burn wax with a fire and clog up a hole so an object goes into another drain. Stuff like that is tiresome and tedious. I don't like walking through every room and than the whole board is altered, making you return to every room and door again in a huge hospital. It is confusing where you have or have not been, regardless of a map. Silent Hill's puzzles are too involved sometimes. I love a challenge, and completed Devil May Cry and MGS2 without any help, but some things should not be so overdone. SH2 over does the puzzles in several times.

Lastly, the boss fights at the end with two Pyramid Heads were not as challenging as I expected them to be. Thank God there was a big boss fight after that because they moved way too slow for an exciting challenge. Overall, Silent Hill 2 is the best horror game ever made, unless you consider the first one to be better. I have no argument there, but the graphics and improved gameplay in the second one are sure to attract more people since everyone has already played the first, and probably by now the second is history as well. Silent Hill 3 comes out in April 2003 and looks awesome as hell. This game will be a classic and deserves attention for it's awesome story-telling, artwork, scenery, atmosphere, sounds, music, characters, and ending. An awesome achievement by the guys at Konami. I only hope the third one fixes the problems that were evident in the second Silent Hill 2. This is one great game that is very creative and disturbing. I absolutely love that!

Not bad at all.

A few friends of mine told me that the original Silent Hill was so scary that they were afraid to play it. Then when the sequel came out, one said that someone could only play it for an hour at a time until it started to mess with their mind. When I recieved it for Christmas, another dared me to play it with the lights off. Well, let me tell you, I was disappointed with the original. I thought the graphics were really grainy and the controls were clunky. Plus, I'm the first and third person shooter type, so naturally I didn't like the crummy combat and scarce power-ups. Silent Hill 2 is nominally better. The controls are still clunky, and I wonder if Konami will ever make it possible to jump in their games. The graphics, voice acting, plot, and hero are all much cooler, though. In addition, one gets somewhat used to the controls with some practice.

The original game's story didn't have much originality. Great, they find an abandoned baby and, wouldn't you know it, she disappears into Silent Hill, drawn by a strange force. The plot behind the sequel is awesome, getting a letter from a late spouse, meeting someone who looks exactly like her and knows everything about her, and many more twists. I also like the option of choosing to play the game as a morbid version of Myst, excising combat altogether, although I haven't taken that path. It took me a little while to discover that there actually is an introduction to this game, but this time one has to keep the title screen on and wait a couple minutes for it to start. (It's worth the wait, by the way.)

The sequel is definitely scarier. I mean, fighting those mutant pterodactyls and dogs in the first game was kinda lame. The dwarves with the carving knives were probably the scariest, but they only made me angry with wasting my ammunition. Silent Hill 2's humanoid freaks that look like they're wrapped in tight bloody plastic look much cooler, especially when they spray that acid. Some of them crawl with frightening speed and jump out from under cars when one gets too close. Later, butchered mannequins try to attack the player, and they are even more disturbing and seamlessly crafted. The puzzles are meant for intelligent minds, and I like not being treated like an idiot. As with the original, I still think that the radio takes away the surprise of the monsters, and therefore, most of the scare. But if I were actually searching for my late wife in a mutant-infested town, I would probably appreciate it (though I would appreciate a few drums of napalm too).

All in all, I am satisfied with the game, even if it is not based on heart-stopping, in-your-face action. It's a definite improvement over the original, and I am very eager to complete it and find out just what the hell is going on in Silent Hill.

A slow unchallenging scavenger hunt.

This game takes forever to develop any sense of interest for the player. The first hour of the game is nothing more than a directionless, plot less scavenger hunt of unrelated items. Only to be met with a senseless but super easy puzzle and boss.

This game was disappointing. Also the graphics are average. What is most disappointing about the graphics is the overabundant use of fog effects. The player cannot see more than a few feet in front of his face for the entirety of the game. Instead of coming off as creepy, it is a hassle and really eliminates the pleasure of the locations. With the powerful rendering hardware of the PS2 behind it, it seems senseless to clutter the screen with fog ALL the time. Some say that that's ambience. It just is a lack of game development to me. This game is a big disappointment.

It is too slow and disjointed to make any progress in the game yeild any pleasure for the player.

I do not recommend it.
