A Classic PS1 Title On PC

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 3 / 3

All the legendary RPG fun, but on PC. This version is really rare and hard to find; mine was borrowed from a friend. If you've never played FFVII, and see this somewhere, I'd pick it up. It's just as good as on PS1, especially given the fact that virtually any current computer can run it.

It has everything a great RPG needs - strong characters, a great bad guy, some bumbling idiots, a great magic system, lots of sidequests, awesome cutscenes...the epic quest spans 3 disks, so be ready for a good while of playtime. The graphics, by today's standards, are quite weak. Walking around in towns/buildings, things look kinda flat. However, the graphics for in-battle scenes are much better. The cutscenes are awesome, and frequent. And if you pop in one of the 3 disks, you can open and watch whatever cutscene you want with Windows Media Player. The sound and music is pretty good. Lots of nice BGM, and some cool sound effects.

Controls are a bit iffy, on PC at least. You have to use the Num Pad to MOVE. It kinda strains your hand. I don't know what people on a laptop would have to do...at least, you can use a gamepad or customize the controls to your liking.

One more thing: if you're playing this on a computer that uses Windows XP, the game will always lock up and exit out when you try to do chocobo racing. This isn't good, becuase you're required to race chocobos at least once to continue through the game. Use this patch to solve that problem. Google "Final Fantasy VII PC chocobo patch" or something, and you should find something that will help you.

Anyway, FFVII is a truly amazing game, anyone with a PS1 or a PC should buy it and play it through at least once.

This game is fantastic, and you wont be able to put it down for a long long time. I have over 120+ hours played on my game save. Final Fantasy VII Platinum Edition features a revamped old soundtrack...that I find 2x better than the PSone version's soundtrack. Although it takes a while to adjust to the numpad controls, after playing for a while, you'll wonder how you would have done it any other way. The on-screen controls are bizarre and during scenes such as the timed puzzle in the rocket ship, you'll have a hard time typing in key combos. Materia allows you to use different magics on different characters, allowing for different characters to use Summons, Magic, and Cure. My tip: dont give up solely because of the controls---this game is FANTASTIC and although I found the console experience more enthralling and easier to jump into, the PC version was much more cinematic and was totally worth it. FF7 is by far the best game I have ever played, and you do not want to miss out on this adventure. My only tip: dont save over the same file, especially before you enter the Northern Crater--you wont be able to exit it if you do.

Replayability: ***** (Tons of extra caves, quests, missions, mini-games to find, extra materia, weapons, limit-breaks, and bosses to fight well after the game is over.)
Gameplay: ***** (Amazing boss fights, you will be on the edge of your seat during battles, incredibly fun)
Story: ***** (The plot twists, the depth in the story, the emotions...its AMAZING)
Graphics: ***** (You can view on a big resolution, better textures and stuff. More crisp than the PSone version)
Controls: **** (Takes a while to get used to, you wont want to try another control setup once you do)
Sound: ***** (Sound effects are recycled from the PSone game, BUT, the music was totally redone, and that is one of the biggest parts of this game)
Addictiveness: ***** (I stopped playing my other games for almost 4 months when I got into this game)

The best part of this game is that it is so easy to pick up and play. The Ruby and Emerald Weapons provide you with more challenge than the last boss of the game. Raising chocobos and minigames at the Golden Saucer couldnt be more fun, and this remains the only game besides World of Warcraft that I havent uninstalled from my computer. Final Fantasy VII is a keeper, and dont be discouraged by the prices on Amazon, by the time you're done with the game, you will believe it to be the best $50 you have spent on a game. I would know, because I said the same thing.

Great game, but doesn't work on many computers

Storywise, graphics wise, and fun-wise this game is great. If you can get it to work, that is. It is a notoriously buggy game that simply will not run on many computers without crashing every 15 minutes. Be sure to check out the tech support to see just how unreliable the game really is, and how little the company cares about making it work correctly.

Well Well Well! Square spins an awesome RPG out.

As was expected this game kicked butt. You, Cloud Strife, are on a mission to save the world from Shinra, the Mako sucking corporation. However, this is not the true plot of the story. That will be left up for you to find... The battle system is very unique. Every player has a charge counter. When that fills after a few seconds, its your turn to do your stuff, whether it's your attack, limits, magic, summon, deathblow, or sense. I'll explain those later. The plot is so thick and rich its wonderfully interesting. Limit Breaks are special moves each character uses. Magic are spells like Fire,Ice, and lightning. Summon are moves that use demons to attack like Ifrit, Shiva, Levithan, and Bahamut Zero. Deathblows are powerful attacks. Sense is a move that tells you what the enemy is and what it's like. I could go on and tell you about the Materia and chocobos but heck that would take ad infinitum. I'll just lay out some characters you'll get. Tifa Lockheart, Aeris Gainsborugh,Barret Wallace, Red XIII, Cid Highwind, Yuffie Kisaragi, Cait Sith, and Vincent Valentine. P.S. Any question e-mail me at So2smd@aol.com

I'll admit it, I'm only on the 1st CD, but this game has me hooked. The graphics are incredable, the music rocks, and I just love the story. This game has depth. The best part? Materia combos. It keeps the stratagy going long into the game, and it keeps you interested. Well worth $20!

FF7 Rocks!

Final Fantasy 7 is the BEST game ever created in my opinion. The storyline is nice and comlicated and the materia system is amazing. I love all the veicles, but my favorite is the Highwind. Everything about the game is amazing, from the graphics to the awesome battle music. The characters are well devoloped and each have a very different role in the storyline. The only thing bad about the game is that the music in the computer version isn't very good. This problem isn't there in the Playstation version (the version I have) however. This game is THE game to get!

AWESOME GAME

Ok, This games totally kicks butt! The story line is incredible and really keeps you on your seat. It may get boring t sometimes but right when that starts happening, something unexpected happens. If you're a first time RPG player....start with this one. WARNING: Very addictive

It might be nice if it worked at all

I never got this software working on my new 350MHz Pentium II with 128MB of RAM. Tech support didn't help me, either. It froze up on me every time. Low marks for quality.
