On par with its predecessors

I am an avid Final Fantasy player, having been a fan since Final Fantasy 1 for the NES, and having played each game since, including Japanese versions not released in the U.S. Final Fantasy VII certainly was no disappointment.

Some other Final Fantasy games, such as 2 and 3 (Jap: 6), have better plots than VII; however, VII was certainly very close, and far exceeds the standards of most other RPGs. The plot in VII is more complicated than in its predecessors. Hordes of details are tightly interwoven in a magnificent latice. However, there are some scenes and characters that I will describe, for lack of a better word, as stupid. People who have played the game may recall Cate and the funhouse or Don's House of Love.

The graphics are superb, and the game engine is great. Battle scenes are realistic, the scenery is beautiful, and well-rendered full-screen MPEG videos are seamlessly integrated into the game. My only regret is that the controls in a 3D environment are a bit more challenging, especially if you're using the keyboard.

I can't say I like Materia or the new magic system, whereby a person knows only the magic spells corresponding to the limited number of Materia he or she equips. Furthermore, the game isn't nearly as challenging; I played it all the way through with only two deaths, and there are places to save the game all over the place, which means that even if you do die, you have as many chances as you'd like. The game doesn't necessitate purchasing any new equipment; the gear you find along the road will get you all the way through if you're good at battle tactics.

For the benefit of people who haven't played a Final Fantasy game before, I'll describe the basic workings. The game is an epic adventure centered around one character, but including about 7 others. It requires no coordination to play, since your success in turn-based battle depends on your strategy, not your timing. There is a good balance between the storyline and battle scenes, so you should enjoy the game regardless of which you like best. The game is really something, and it's fairly cheap. If you play one Final Fantasy game, make it this one. If you play two, get a Super NES and play 3 (6 in Japan) as well. Then play 8 or 2, or see if you can get your hands on 5.

Great for adventure gamers and RPG fans!

I've never played the Playstation version of this game and this was my first time playing any sort of Final Fantasy game. I originally purchased it to watch the computer animation but quickly fell in love with the world, the characters, and the dozens of things to do.

You start off playing Cloud (or whatever you decide to name him) and are an ex-soldier now fighting for a group called Avalanche who want to shut down a company called Shinra because they're using Mako energy to power the city. Mako energy is the life energy of every living thing on the planet and once its used up the planet will die. From there you're quickly plunged into a story about love, betrayal, duty, and saving the world.

I easily got 40+ hours of gameplay and the story blew me away. Every time yu think you know what's going on another clue pops up and blows everything else away. There's an even balance between combat and actual RPG where you talk to folks in towns.

This game also has great replayibility with dozens of sub-quests and side games to keep you busy. Can you raise a gold chocobo? Can you defeat all three weapons? Can you find all the mega-elixers? Can you gain the secret characters? Can you find everyone's super technique and ultimate weapons?

The story was amazingly detailed, the characters were all unique, and the game pulled no punches. I highly reccomend it.

Still My Favorite of the Series

As an avid fan of the Final Fantasy series, I have played most every game in the series. (Games after VIII yet included because I've yet to get myself a Playstation/PS2.) Overall, the quality of the Final Fantasy series is excellent, but Final Fantasy VII is still my favorite, beating out even the later Final Fantasy VIII. Final Fantasy VII has so many great qualities, among them:

Replayability: Anybody that says that they did everything there is to do in Final Fantasy VII the first time they played through is lying. There are so many different subquests. I don't wish to spoil them, but they involve dating, chocobos, minigames and so much more. Oh, and the Gold Saucer, which I won't spoil, but there hasn't been anything like it in any of the games I've played.

Plotline: My favorite of the Final Fantasy games I've played. Adventure, love, betrayal, deceit, intrigue, it's all there and more.

Battle System: One of the most well developed of the Final Fantasy games I've played.

To respond to a couple of the listed "cons," I personally did not find the interface to be all that frusturating. In fact, I find it a lot less frusturating than the interfaces of some of the earlier Final Fantasy games. It's not too difficult to figure out either and anything that may be unclear is cleared up in the provided and detailed instructions. As for the sound, anything that may be lacking in the sound department is more than made up for in the amazing music, which I find to be the most memorable and beautiful of the Final Fantasy games I've played.

Don't let its age and somewhat outdated graphics keep you from playing this game. Try it, you'll definitely find it worth your time.

Best game ever!

This is the most amazing game that I have ever played in my whole entire life. With an absolutely amazing storyline, wonderful graphics and awesome music, this is most definitely the best game ever made. After the first 10 minutes of playing, you are completely sucked into the epic story of this game. Cloud, the very attractive main character, is in an epic fight for the life of his planet, first against Shinra Inc. and then against Sephiroth, who sends a meteor that is going to destroy the entire planet if Cloud and his buddies don't do something. I was deeply touched by the story surrounding the character Aeris, who is in love with Cloud. As you follow the story from when Cloud meets Aeris to her death in the middle of the game, you become attached to this funny girl. The saddest and most touching moment in the whole game is Aeris' death, and the music at the moment is so beautiful and so sad at the same time that you just want to start sobbing. If you want the most amazing, touching, and addictive(I really mean it) game, then Final Fantasy 7 is the game for you. BUY THIS GAME!

Man, just when you thought PC gaming had reached its zenith, Final Fantasy 7 was translated to PC format. This game has story, graphics, action, and an adversary worthy of the awesome name "Sephiroth". If you don't buy this game, I think you need to re-examine your outlook on life. Mac users, condolences to your amigdala if you don't own a Playstation because you're missing out on a great game!!!! PC gamers, say goodbye to your family for a few days and prepare for one of the greatest addictions you'll ever experience. And by the way, if you discover the secret of the Knights of the Round, you are the master....

This game has to be the best game ever made. The storyline was so engrossing, I actually cried at the sad parts,my heart beat fast at at the exciting parts, and I chuckled at the funny parts. This game literally changed my life. If you don't think this game is very good, go to yahoo.com and search FF7. This game had probaly spwaned more of a fan following then any game ever before. The bottom line: If you like Rpgs, GO GET THIS GAME NOW! If you don't know what it is,GO GET IT NOW.And if your one of those people who doesn't like Baldur's Gate, Diablo, and other Rpgs, I will admit i didn't like thme either. But this game is in a class of its own. It is not even as much a game as it is an experience. If you don't get thid game, you are missing out on the story of a lifetime.

IT MAY SOUND CHEESY, BUT OVERALL A GREAT GAME

I thought that this particular game's dialogue at times was a bit immature or for a 10 year old. But overall the graphics were intense considering it was made 5 years ago. The cinematic scenes were a bonus, and a break from some of the "corn" dialogue. The summon spells and level breaks animations were a definte must and will be enjoyed by all (especially Cloud's limit level 4). The game play was simple and the controls were a cinch. I highly recommend this game for any diehard rpg fan and a invite to try for the gamers in the sports and action category (I'm pretty sure they'll enjoy it too). The story line ran along the lines of a soap opera and the special bosses gave you a run for your money. Overall this is one at the top of my list, I invite anyone that wants a challenge to come and try it. It starts a little slow, but it will pull you in.

Um what do you think the title should be....

Well this may not be my favorite game of the Final Fanstasy series but I still think it may be one of the best games ever made. Squaresoft has once again made and involving game thatll keep you coming back for more. I played this particular version on both my PC and Playstation however I enjoyed it more on the PC. In this game you assume the role of Cloud who may be named otherwise. You are a mercenary who was formerly part of a government type group SOLDIER who is protecting Shinra. In the game you are being paid by an enviromental revolutionary group AVALANCHE. As you start the game you must destroy a power plant that uses Mako energy which is the life blood of the planet. As you get deeper into this very long and involving game the story unfolds to much more entertaining experience. It's packed full of fun mini games plus you get to do alot of funny things like dress up ass a girl ect. The battle system is the typical FF/Square timed battle. Magic is used by aquiering Materia, each Materia gives you certain Magic abilities. The Chocobos are also back along with amazing graphics and cinematics. I feel the only flaw of this game is the sound which isnt so bad. The music is good for a mood setter and is anything but repeptative but sound affects where to me of. But anyway you see it this game is a definate buy!

A fantasy to end all others

This game has excellent graphics and movie sequences, beautifully rich music, and is fun to play.

With that out of the way, here's the real info on this game: This game rises above- and beyond what you can expect from a computer game. The reason is the incredibly intricate storyline behind it, and the realness of the characters. The plot twists are shocking, disturbing, and continually caught me off gaurd. The dialogue can be a little simple, but it gives the game a feel of honesty. As well, there are some *truly* emotionally moving scenes in this game. The story makes this game very immersive-- like reading a very good novel, and not wanting to put it down.

This game had me excited with it's continual action and adventure; it had me angry and shocked with the incredible wickedness of its villains; it gave me a warm feeling from the friendship between the loveable characters; it had me in heartfelt tears over the terriblness of the events as they unfolded; and it made me laugh too. So many times during the game I found myself saying 'I can't believe this is happening'. At one point I had to stop playing for awhile because I was so angry and hurt over what had happenned (don't read too many of the reviews below, there are some very big spoilers).

I know, I know it's just a game. Please keep an open mind here--I'm not a video-game-hermit-freak either (I only own only a couple of computer games). Reading some of the other reviews for this game, I was thinking that some of these reviewers are real hacks obsessed with gaming. I was dead wrong. This game will tug at you emotionally, just as a movie or novel is capable. Perhaps even moreso.

I will *never* forget the story of Final Fantasy 7.

Absolutely stunning storyline

An unbelievably complex, deep plot which is strengthened by even more impressive characters. Absolutely incredible. I will never play another game like it. If you like action games and can't stand five minutes of plot development this game is not for you. The cutscenes are impressive but overall the graphics aren't great compared to today's standards. Final Fantasy VII is hands down a classic and the plot and characters by themselves lifted the game to a level above all other RPGs I've played. Not only does it have the best plot and characters of the FF series, but in my opinion of any video game ever made. If this was a book, it would be an instant classic. Surprisingly profound. I cannot say enough.
