awesome game, very difficult to play

This WW2 combat game puts you behind the Axis front near the waning months of the war to end fascism in Europe (tunfortunately Communism took over after the war in Eastern Europe). You play an American soldier who begins the mission storming the beaches of Nazi-occupied Northern France, and continue through killing schusstaffel soldiers with weapons like shotguns, M-1 rifle, colt 45 pistol, the sniper rifle, grenades. grenade launcher, etc... The game is a first person shooter with beautiful nearly photo-realistic graphics and intense sound effects. This game would be perfect if 1) aiming the weaponry was a little more control-friendly to the gamer, and 2) more realistic physics (enemies in reality probably do not lean over and fall down dead peacefully after being hit in the chest with a 70 pound tank gun bullet fired from a Sherman at 50 yards) The levels get increasingly difficult and some are rediculously impossible. other than those three things, the game is a good buy.

Good, but problematic

This is a fairly good game. I perhaps under-rate it because I played the PC version (MOH: Allied Assault) first.

First, the good things -- this is an entertaining first person shooter game. You have a nice variety of weapons, your enemies use fairly intelligent tactics, your fighting is very mission-oriented and follows a nice storyline. The sound is amazing.

Now the bad stuff -- I was surprised at how poor the graphics were. Despite some nice touches (enemy AI, facial expressions, etc.) much of the animation is blocky and awkward -- not even as good as on my PC. You can't save the game until the end of a mission, which can mean a lot of repition (especially for the opening D-Day sequence). There are occasional bugs and freezes that force you to reset (my favorite was when I fell through a city street and couldn't move).

My biggest problem was the controller. It was very difficult to shoot anything. I realize that no PS2 game will match the precision of a PC's mouse. But honestly -- Half-Life's controller was fine and, even better, had a target lock feature. The difficulty in MOH pointing was incredibly frustrating at times. Here's a tip: Try pointing your gun and then moving your body to line up the target -- it works much better.

One last comment to a previous complaint: the sniper rifle does give you a good view -- you have to use the D-pad to zoom as it starts out at minimal zoom.

I rented it. I recommend others do the same. It's a great game but the replay value is low.

Demo Comments and Thoughts About Previous Reviewers

The demo of this game gives fans and future fans a very good idea of what to expect in MOH:Frontline. Although it does have it's faults, framerate issues, questionable A.I. and NPC's jumping 10 feet in the air(some bugs that will be fixed in the final version) it captures the feel of the previous MOH's that were on the PSone, only times it by a 1000. This demo just screams "play me", and I did, about a hundred times. It just doesn't get old.
I don't want to say the final product will be the best game ever but it will without a doubt be one hell of a ride. Take that to the bank.
As for some previous comments. Don't listen to anyone who said they played the final game. That one guy posted two months before the release. Not even sites like IGN and Gamespot have final copies. Please wait until it's released before making a choice on buying it or not.
Also, DO NOT LISTEN TO ANYONE who says get Medal Of Honor:Allied Assualt instead of Frontline. In reality you should get both if at all possible. These are two different games with the exception of the D-Day missions. Everything else is totally different. One in the end maybe better than the other but when talking about the MOH series the one that's worse is still a fantastic game. You should play every MOH game, past, present and future titles!!!!!!!
In closing, don't worry about hearing about control problems or some of the bugs in the demo. The controls are fully customizable(check the latest GamePro), the y axis on the right stick can be inverted(so down is up and up is down) and you can have the cross hairs on screen all the time(check IGN movies or Gamespot).

Awesome Game

Medal of Honor Frontline is one of the few great console first person shooters. The controls are tight, the graphics are amazing, and the sound effects some of the best ever in a console game, besides SOCOM. The music also fits the mood of the scene perfectly, with no crazy techno music or metal style messing up the feeling.

The graphics are top-notch and some of the best on the PS2. The weapons are well modeled, and npc's and enemy characters are highly detailed, all the way to the zipper it seems at times, the environments are amazing, with little details such as tapestries in certain buildings that don't have some random nazi logo, but have actual images. And the draw distance is never a problem, though many times you are under a dark sky, or a poorly lit area anyways.

The sound effects are amazing, with the gun sound effects being recorded from the actual guns and not some computer created sound. The screams of other characters dieing is also amazingly chilling.

The music is a somewhat light classical blend, with some more upbeat moments, but most of the time you don't even notice that it is playing. That is how well it is done, well enough that it gives the game more of an atmosphere, but doesn't break in as to disturb you from your nazi shooting.

Enemy A.I, a subject that is very important when you are talking about games, especially shooters. If the enemies have no brain, then the game would merely be a run of the mill, shoot everything that stands like a log when you are right on top of it shooter.

But this isn't the case for Frontline, the enemies are smart, almost to smart. The will duck for cover, roll out of the way, and take pot shots from high vantage points while concealed in trees. It is truly amazing.

Overall Medal of Honor Frontline for the PS2 is a great single player game, but to get some multiplayer action going on, you are going to have to get the GCN or X-Box version. A recommended game for all.

Great gameplay, and who really cares about "great graffix." Don't get me wrong I wanna be able to see stuff clearly, but I grew up with an Atari. Levels are challenging, but not impossible even on hard. Enemies aren't the smartest, but are far from stupid. And yes, this game may be short if you dedicated your life to it, but if you're showering regularly and doing something else with your life, the length is good enough. I just wish there were other games as good.

This game really makes you feel like you are in the great war. The sounds are great, graphics are good, and the controls are good too. I wished I got the PC version instead though since I like to aim with the mouse more than the controller.

Everything we could have hoped for...

Wow! That's all I can keep saying. Just wait until you start this game at D-Day, at the Invasion of Normandy on the beach. This game definitely takes some cues from Saving Private Ryan, sans the gore but with the same intensity.
You will recognize several locales taken straight out of scenes from Private Ryan.
The game has a little bit more of an intense and serious edge, thanks to the Private Ryan influence, than its prequels did. That's a very good thing.
If you have played this series before, you will be pleased to see customizeable and improved controls along with the amazing upgrades on graphics, sound, more amazing orchestral music, and overall sophistication that everyone expected from this title.

Make sure you play this on an awesome TV with home theater surround sound. This game will make you sweat.
It's that intense!
This is not a game where you just charge in the room and start blasting. It requires some skill and patience, just like the earlier games did.

Halo is still currently the king of all FPS's...but this is a crown prince for sure. Great story, intelligent A.I., everything you could want in an awesome FPS is here.
I certainly believe that it is the best FPS on the PS2 as of now.

The only things it has a against it are that it seems kind of short (which may be just because I played this thing nonstop like an insane person) and there are no multiplayer options. Multiplayer options with intelligent and adjustable bots should become a staple on all FPS so that there can be almost unlimited replay value. Small nits really, because this series has always been about an extremely intense single player experience. Boy, does it deliver!!

The reason why this game doesn't get 5 stars is because of the following:

1) CLIPPING PROBLEMS: Yes, I know, every FPS has them, but in this game its really bad in areas. Specifically, while I was playing the Arnhem Nights level I was walking atop a piece of rubble and somehow fell INSIDE of it. If I walked around I could see the outside of the level. Anyone who has worked with Worldcraft knows that that is not a good thing. But what was even worse, was that when I managed to jump back in the level I couldn't get to where I was supposed to be. There were several windows with the glass broken out. But the game wouldn't let me jump through them. Americans aren't THAT tall, are they? And you would think that you could blast an unhinged door out of the way--but no, it's a non-interactive object. The only way I got back to where I needed to be was by USING THE CLIPPING PROBLEM TO MY ADVANTAGE. I had to walk outside the level just to get to my proper place. Now that was pathetic. And frustrating.

In another level (towards the end of the game) I got STUCK in a wrap of barbed wire and even in a tree once. You can not get out, even detonating your own grenades nearby won't unstick you.

MINOR clipping problems I can tolerate, but this . . . .

2) DAMAGE: One time, I took my BAR and pumped 5 rounds (BOOM!BOOM!BOOM!BOOM!BOOM!)into a German's chest at point blank range. Shortly after, this crazy Nazi gets up as if nothing more than a bee bit him and assumes his firing stance. My goodness, even the sound emmited from a BAR at that range should be able to hurt you. I often pop Nazis in the HEAD with a pistol and they STILL LIVE??? Waitaminute here, I thought I was playing Medal of Honor, not Return to Castle Wolfenstein.

3) AMONG OTHER THINGS: Levels--and the game itself--are as linear as a railroad track. They should have made it more like Starfox (SNES) where you can pick different branches to get to a common destination. Also, I noticed some CONTINUITY PROBLEMS. You end one level with, say, your pistol, a sniper rifle, and a machine gun. But you start the next level--which is just a continuation of the last--with only your pistol. Why would any soldier just toss out two perfectly good weapons and leave himself with only a pea-shooter?

AS FOR THE ISSUE OF BLOOD: I recall reading in a video game magazine that the makers of this game wanted to target a large audience. The best way to do that was to avoid the "M" rating. So they took the blood out. But seriously EA, you could easily have had a "Blood? Yes No" option. But no, they didn't. Don't worry, it's not that big a deal.

Look, I know I'm making this game sound bad, so let me get to its redeeming aspects.

SOUND: This is one of the few games that has really OUTSTANDING sound effects. The lovely and lethal sound of your sniper rifles, the drum-like beat of your BAR and the music itself, which does a VERY good job of setting the mood.

LEVEL DESIGN: Apart from the (ahem) clipping problems, the levels are vast and varied. You'll see everything from beaches to bunkers, towns, villages, mines, hangars, docks, and mansions. My favorite level, though, was ROUGH LANDING, where you're in this beautiful village filled with towering windmills.

HUMOR: I'm in this mansion, blasting Nazis with my shotgun. I'm in the kitchen to be precise. Well, as I walk up to this table I get a message up top that reads THE BREAD IS DELICIOUS. Just the thought of shooting Nazis while eating some good French bread . . . . Then there's this one part where you actually start a bar fight (the drinking bar, not the Browning Automatic Rifle) by pouring beer on this Nazi's head. The two Nazis start punching each other while you sit back and laugh. And finally, opening a bathroom door to find a Nazi sitting on the toilet. And yes, you can flush the toilet after you flush the Nazi out.

HISTORY: Between levels, you'll get to see actual black and white footage of WWII, while a commentator in the background tells you what is going on so far in the war.

Although this game doesn't escape this critic's war of words unscathed, it does come out in decent enough shape to warrant at least a medal and a purchase.

The Best Medal of Honor Game Yet!!!

Ok, so I don't have a computer and haven't played Allied Assault so I can't compare MOH Frontline with that but I just picked up a copy of Frontline last night and it was amazing. I'll start with the positives and then get into the very miniscule negatives.

First of all the graphics are incredible. I've always told my friends that if they just could have put better graphics on the original MOH it would have been the best game of all time, EA was obviously listening (guess they have my apartment bugged). Anyway, along with the wonderfull graphics you also get one heck of a story line to go through. You start off in the D-Day invasion and man is it amazing. So there isn't exactly as many soldiers storming the beach as in the real thing, hook your PS2 up to surround sound and crank it up and it's as good as watching Saving Private Ryan, if not better. Bulletts go whizzing by you, bombs drop around you kicking up sand and dirt that cover you and block your vision. I've played this level over and over just because it's so darn cool. You'll be running along the beach and all around you your fellow soldiers are dying, I know it's not the real thing but it gives you some idea what our boys went through back then.

Ok, moving on, I've played about half the game (I put it on easy so that's why I was able to finish half the game in one night) and another cool level is one where you have to make your way through a Dutch town and find a German uniform so that you can infiltrate a pub. Once in the pub you can have the piano player play a tune and all the German soldiers will start drunkenly singing along to it. It's really pretty cool. Anyways, you then go out back of the pub and start a fight between two drunken German soldiers. A really cool add in if you ask me. So that is just a little of the positives, really every level is quite spectacular to play and I could describe all of them but it would take me forever so I'll just stop there.

Now the negatives. The first negative that comes to mind is that there is no 2 player mode in this game. While this doesn't take that much away from the game it would have been nice to fight a friend in the Dutch country side. I guess EA decided the 2 player mode wasn't that good in the first two MOH's so they decided to leave it out all together and concentrate on the main game which they did a wonderful job on so maybe no 2 player mode is for the best. Another negative, and a rather small one at that, is that it is sometimes hard to navigate yourself up and down ladders. You have to look up to go up a ladder and down to go down which really isn't that big of a deal except that I hate limitations such as this. That's about all I have for the negatives, trust me you're gonna want to go out and get this game, it's unbelievable.

Wow! Better than the first and second.

Medal of Honor: Frontline caps them all as the best first-person shooter of all time. Once again you are Lueteniant James Patterson called back into the OSS to 'infiltrate' Germany and destroy the German War Machine. You fight alongside your Allies in multiple operations including Overlord (D-Day) and Market Garden. The graphics are better and the gameplay is still the same which makes this game great. The controls are a little different, but what the hell, the game is still great. One specific mission is the same as the first MOH. You have to scuttle a German U-Boat. The enemy is smarter and more resourceful which means more dangerous. The great bonus to this game is even though you get all the medals and stars, you will not recieve cheat codes for your valiant efforts.
Bottom Line: I quote "You don't play, you volunteer."
MOH Frontline destroys the competition
